When bedsheets got torn or stained (usually bleach or rust stains), my Mom would cut down the good parts into bias tape for her aprons. She said the earlier brands weren't always colorfast or too costly. She always wore aprons to do housework but didn't want to spend lots of money yet enjoyed the look of bias tape. 🍄🍄

This method gives you 5 yards of Continuous Bias tape which gives you 180” inches of bias tape. An average queen size quilt is at least 90” sq meaning you will need aprox 360” inches of tape plus an extra 10”-12” to go around the corners & for the ends to meet up. If you do this to a yard of fabric then you will have more then enough for a Queen quilt plus some left over for a throw or pot holders, etc

Great tutorial. My mom taught me years ago when the red card was first sold. I found out the hard way that if you match the other two sides of the cut square, the strips will be on the grain. The binding is flatter if the seams are set before pressing open. I am smiling. So many of your tips were taught to me by my Mom. Miss her.

How do you set seams?
@kerryneas1837 ай бұрын
@@Carolyn-qd8mj just press them before opening. It makes the thread sink down into the fabric. Then press the seam open.

Before you open the seam allowances to press open the seam, press the stitching. The heat (and steam if using steam) flattens things out, and in the case of natural fibers, "shrinks" the cotton thread and material to regain the shape before the seam was stitched." @@Carolyn-qd8mj

Thank you! You're so concise and clear with your explanations and everything is so easy to see! I've found homemade bias tape so easy to use. It's not stiff and goes around corners so much easier than the store bought. When I was brave enough to try making my own, I found the quantity so ample I didn't have joins like I did in the past with store bought. They don't give you much in those packages! This truly is the best tutorial I've found and I've watched dozens! Thanks again!

Hi.. great tips! You mentioned getting it at the fabric store. That would be great if they actually had any to pick from. JoAnn’s to be exact. After several trips over a few wks… it’s 25 mins away so not super convenient, I finally asked how often they ordered it. The display had not changed. The girl shrugged her shoulders… & said that wasn’t her job so she didn’t know!! And what they had was $3.49 a pkg w/ only 3 yds ea. I make mine as well!! Much cheaper & what ever color I choose. Thank you for sharing you work ❤

In Australia it is $11.99 for a similar sized pack. Patterns if not on sale are $20 to $40 each ( current sale has some at 3 for $25 dollars ) and I just got some fabric on sale to make some little girl dresses for charity $231.00. The cost of everything post covid is insane but it is always cheaper to make your own bias binding and easy too.

Decided to try Temu and ordered a set of bias tape makers and try out some of their fabric that coordinated with a fabric panel I had picked up. The fabric was meh and lost a bunch because it wasn't squared by a full 10 degrees. Since it was off already, i decided to just make bias tape out of it, and ohh, do I love that bias tape maker set. I have found some pre-made bias tape with prints on it at the store but they are usually a limited edition and they tend to display them up on top of bias tape display in a smaller displaybox where no one looks. So I found some on clearance last year in pretty springtime prints at Joann Fabrics. However, I'm still a fan of the type you make yourself. It's less stiff and easier to use on curves.
