A tip: If you sew the six hexies around the center hexie (one continuous thread) you can then remove the paper from the center making it much easier to sew the sides of each together.

This is so perfect! I usually embroider or quilt (quilt as you go) blocks on the road, but I am out of both those projects at the moment. We are driving from Colorado to Florida (and back), so now I have a new EPP project to take along. I'm just getting started with EPP and your video has really helped me understand the process. Thank you very much for this detailed and informative video. Happy Trails!

fiskars Hexie x-L SQueeze Punch are great to recycle all your junk mail postcard type paper into hundreds of hexies. Five-Inch square Charm packs can be cut easily into 2 1/2 squares. 1 five inch will make 4 squares to cover 4 hexie shapes. You can trim the corners later. ALSO, if you punch a small circular hole or heart in the center of the punched paper it will help easily release the paper/recycled postcard when it's times to pull out the hexie paper template with a small cuticle type stick

I know your comment from a year ago, but since she isn't answering you, I will explain. When all of the hexagons have been sewn together, you can place them right side down on a mat of some sort, and press them with an iron. This flattened the seam allowances and helps to keep its shape. The pieces of paper can now be removed. Another swipe of the iron, and you are now able to select a backing or add some embroidery to the hexies. Sometimes special heat release glue is used instead of basting. The glue releases from the paper during the ironing. A good glue for this is Sewline. Hope this explanation helps.

I used this technique years ago making yo-yo's back in the 70s. You are right - it is great to have a project on the go or for keeping hands busy while the TV set is on. I am wondering if there is a reason you double the thread rather than using a standard single strand? Thanks for your clear instructions and showing us your set-up!
@JanHowell

Doubling the thread makes it more secure, especially if using for a quilt. Good question.

Jan, thank you so much for this tutorial. I want to do this because I will be traveling a little more this year. I started out with the 2 inch. So far, so good. I wasn't sure how to cut the fabric, so I just cut 5 inch squares. I left the extra on. (Didn't trim). I am hoping to attach this to backing and batting when I am done. Is that possible 🤔

Sometimes you can. If you haven't sewn through them and they don't rip when taking them out. Use your needle to poke the center of the paper and to help pull the paper out.
