It's not too surprising. Even though the current format isn't that bad, after a while people get exhausted when a game becomes too convoluted. That's when people start losging for nostalgia, for something they are familiar with. I started playing legacy formats two years ago too. The same is slowly happening in Pokemon too.

It’s kind of trippy to see that there were cards that didn’t see a release in the TCG for years just casually dropped in the OCG’s first year. Mechanicalchaser was a huge deal in the early TCG because we didn’t get Gemini Elf for so long. And Blue Eyes Ultimate didn’t come over until 2007 and by then it was far more irrelevant. It was noteworthy for making Blue Eyes Shining Dragon actually summonable lol
@StormerSage2 жыл бұрын
If I recall, Mechanicalchaser came in a tournament pack first. So did crush card virus. I'm glad Konami stopped giving out meta warping cards for tournament wins and decided to just make them collector's items.

An incredible video. I've always found myself drawn to this part of yugioh's history, really mindblowing how the modern game turned out by looking at these first few sets. Stopped at the exodia part, but that is so cool. Everyone knew of exodia at that point, and konmai just did a slow roll for 5 sets to collect them all. No joke, this is such a cool way to release a popular monster.
@NeroVingian402 жыл бұрын
And then proceeded to release the Exodia head in a pack that was sold exclusively during a tournament event in Tokyo Dome, citing “the only time to get the Exodia head, ever.” The event ended in a riot that resulted in two people hospitalized. This was the result of Konami’s greediness.

It's actually the other way around. The anime was based on the manga, as was the OCG. Tribute summons weren't introduced in the manga until Battle City in mid-1999, which happens to be about the same time they were introduced into the OCG.

Really appreciate this video. Always was fascinated by the early history of Yu Gi Oh, especially before the TCG. Since a lot of classic cards with their unique, more fantasy-esc, type of artwork were released at that time, it would only take until Tournament packs and such to see them re-released in the West, but even then not all of them.

I'll add because some cards were hard to get at the time that's the reason they really won't limited for years. Just take a look at what the OCG had access to around the time of the very first ban list and it's not hard to see that something like that scarcity played a HUGE influence on things.

The participation cards of the tokyo dome tournament are split up slightly. For attendance you would get gate guardian and dark magician of chaos (no numbers). tri horned dragon was a card given to everyone in the first round, so basically anyone who got the first two cards would get this one too. Sengenjin and Serpent Night Dragon was given in the 2nd and 3rd round, respectively

Magic has a nicer launch but there’s something about Yu-Gi-Oh! I love where I know it’s not always as pretty but way crazier. I got over 300 cards from 99-04 from my neighbor in 07-08 wrapped in a plastic grocery bag. I played with them for years and years. It’s the original anime version of a popular game à la Genshin: Impact being anime BotW, which for some kids today is probably going to be one of their most beloved games of all time.

The Yugioh OCG was more complex than the TCG. Especially since they are both legally separate games by Konami. Cuz the rulings were different and more strict. And the OCG was (and still is) aimed at early teens. I mean the back of the packs say: “対象年齢12才以上” (Translation: “Target age 12 years and older”) Which implies it’s for young teenagers or older. And they still say that on OCG packs to this day (excluding Rush Duels as it’s a spin-off and it’s own game). Which in Japan or in most countries, low teen ratings are 12 and older by their standards. Just so people get a better understanding. Plus the manga and anime targets the same demographic as Shonen anime and manga mainly target young teenage boys between 12 and 18. And we have plenty of reliable sources to support that now.
