Village Kovachevitsa was founded at the end of the 17th century AD. The first cell school was built in 1830, and its church St. Nikolas - in 1848, turning Kovachevitsa into the cultural center of the entire region. The quaint architectural style of building has not been changed since the founding of the village. The only building materials used are stone and wood. The magnificent architectural solutions used in ancient times are still applied unaltered today. Kovachevitsa has repeatedly served as the natural historical stage for the shooting of numerous films. Amazing village and landscapes, thank you, Janna. Something more: The village is situated in the Dabrash part of the Rhodopes Mountain, the most beautiful mountain in Bulgaria. :) The village was founded by refugees from different villages, who tried to escape the Ottoman assimilation in the 17th century. The isolated location and the fresh water supply were the most important factors in this process. The village has never had Ottoman administration, therefore it preserved the Bulgarian traditions. The architecture of the houses is original and unique. Most of them were built in the second half of the 19th century, but there are also new houses, built in the same style. The village was designated an "Architectural and Historical Reserve of National Importance" in 1977. Many Bulgarian movies have been filmed there. Now the village has only about 30 constant inhabitants, but actually a lot more live there in the summer and during the vacations and holidays.There are also many guest-houses and restaurants in the traditional style. According to the most common legend in the Rhodope Mountain, mythical singer Orpheus was born there, who fascinated with his magic music people and animals. Another ancient story tells of the Thracian king Hem and the queen of Rhodope, who loved so much that they were called each one with divine names - Zeus and Hera. The Gods became angry at their audacity and separated them, turning them into distant mountains (now Stara Planina in North and the Rhodopes in South). p.s. It is right to say the village's name in bulgarian, with the emphasis on the letter "A"-KovAchevitsa.:)

Actually you've shown three separate villages - first one - Leshten, traditional but recently made a recreational village, mocking the original architecture. The second one - Gorno Dryanovo - because of the people living there, it is very alive village, but the traditional houses are mostly gone, these ones are more "contemporary" meaning made of bricks and concrete, not from local stone and wood (an art mostly forgotten). Than the last one is truly Kovachevica - it is an architecture reservation, and truly authentic. This is the place where all the famous builders came from, but nowadays there are around 15 locals and the rest are guest-houses.

Fantastic village find. Seems like some of the houses are extremely well maintained and some are abandoned. I noticed there was a for sale sign on one of the houses in english. I wonder what those houses go for. Very peaceful village.

Nice video Janna , good job recording and explaining. Looking at the houses with walls of just stones I was wondering how the stones are secure with no cement holding them together ? Would the wind blow through them in the winter months? With that "House for sale " sign in English they must be looking for people to buy from the USA, UK, Canada, etc.. The renovation costs to bring the house up to modern codes and standards would be very high. I have been watching Maya renovate her house she just bought and to install indoor plumbing is not easy.

Hi Neil! I don't live in Bulgaria anymore, now I'm in Gibraltar. Not sure what to expect now, last time I visited Sunny beach in 2019 or 202, and I liked, I think in May it will be a bit chilly to swim but there are 2 other towns near by, you can take bus to one and then another, so it will be interesting for you to see something different and try local food.

Bulgaria is very safe, especially in the village or small town, of course, just behave nicely and you will be fine 😉 You can rent for any amount of time, they have the same rules - holiday or long term rentals.

Everything is very good, but I am afraid this is not Kovachevitsa, but it is the village of Leshten! And the village of Kovachevitsa is located a few kilometers higher from Leshten, and is even more stunning and unique in terms of architecture ...!
