I really enjoyed watching this video. I inherited an old Hopf violin. When we got it, it had come apart and there was quite a bit of damage to it. A luthier in Salt Lake City did a marvelous job of repairing the violin. That was back in the 1960s. Now my granddaughter is playing the instrument. It is lovely.

My friend has an old HOPF violin that she has asked me to restore. I am no where near qualified to attempt to take on such a task. Thank you for your video to confirm that. But I did learn a lot. You do beautiful work.

I just bought a DAVid HOPF $200, smell like 200yo as supposed just needs new strings and soundpost set which I just received in the mail I can get whole ebony sets really cheap and do external repairs then give the instruments away. Except the two antique ones

I watched both videos and you did a wonderful job. I wonder if a luthier signed his work when he repaired a crack in mine a few years back. You made what you did look so easy as if anyone can do it..kudos to your talent. what a beautiful violin

What a beautiful voice that violin has! Thanks for sharing it has been very entertaining and very educational. The art of Mr. Irps is excellent as a restorer or rather a savior of such instrument. Let me add that the camera shots and the quality of the filming was great. Congratulation to all, I'm looking for the next presentation. Thanks.

I enjoyed your video very much. I know I am five years late, However; one thing looks like a problem with this repair. The fit on the tail saddle is too good. Leaving the fit that tight will cause the top to crack if it is not stored in a perfectly humidity controlled room. In the winter as the air gets dryer, the top shrinks sideways and the tail saddle has opposite grain, so it doesn't shrink as much and wala, cracks on one or both sides of the top saddle that was just replaced. I know, because this happened to my 200 year old Czechoslovakian built Strad copy violin. The cure was to leave the ends of the tail saddle a few thousands of an inch short which allowed the top to shrink without cracking. I would hate to see this fine old instrument crack again in the same place. I build string instruments rather than repair them, but love to learn new techniques from watching these repair videos.

It was a quite informative video. What I do not understand though, is why was the ebony not fitted first, then glued in place: shaped to blend to the body of the violin with some sort of power tools grinding wheels, then a small die grinder with fine stone and burr bits, then finished with die-makers files. Some of these files are so very fine, that they are used to burnish only. It seems to me the risk of damaging a very expensive, if not priceless stringed instrument, increases exponentially fitting ebony the way you show.

I bought a violin; inside tag "Germany", the only tag on it, and decided to do a complete rebuild by taking it to bare wood. In order to do most of the uneven sanding necessary, I filled a small balloon with fine sand. I didn't mention that this is my first time with a violin, and if it had a builder's name, I would not take it down completelt.

When you say, animal glue, is there a preference? I heard of a violin maker here in California that uses Rabbit glue on his violins...I never heard of it, have you? I've always assumed it was either cow or horse.
