You both had an enjoyable January then. My January was a Ryan Cahill month, with Of Blood and Fire, The Fallen, The Exile and Of Darkness and Light. There were also David Baldacci's Long Shadows and Anthony Ryan's To Blackfyre's Keep.

@The Brothers Gwynne Thank you, I'm on the mend! I have 3 favorites. The first is the final of the Beartown trilogy by Fredrik Backman, The Winners. The second is my re-read of Kristoff's Nevernight, & it was great because I sorta skipped the footnotes the first time I read it. My 3rd favorite is a collection of Jane Austen. I stumbled onto a full cast narration that has been really fun 😄. An honorable mention... The Silmarillion. I'd started my reread of it last month and just finished it last night. My vision has improved, and I was able to read along with the audio. Reading the Tolkien and Austen I haven't read is another reading goal of mine in 2023. I'm a happy reader 😊. I am also pleasantly surprised to discover as I was reading last night that one of my favorite metal bands may have chosen their name from the true name of Mount Doom. Sorry, I ramble! 📚📖🥰📚

That's funny because I struggle to see why people call Red Rising Fantasy 😅 Glad to see The Darkness That Comes Before was (mostly) a win with you, Ed. Prince of Nothing is currently my favourite Fantasy trilogy, and the books only get darker from here. In January I finished/read: *Fantasy* Books of Babel 2: Arm of the Sphinx - I enjoyed it but not as much as Senlin Ascends so I will continue the series but it's just not a priority. Dandelion Dynasty 1: Grace of Kings - Enjoyed the first half but it wasn't until the 2nd half it really clicked with me. It's my book of the month. Greatcoats 2: Knight's Shadow - This was a lot of fun. Wilful Princess & Piebald Prince / Robin Hobb *Historical-Fiction* Last Kingdom 3: Lords of the North - Probably my favourite book in the series so far, though Uhtred falls in love ridiculously easily. *Urban Fantasy* Dresden Files: A Fistful of Warlocks Dresden Files: A Restoration of Faith - I felt bad about skipping most of the short stories and now I think I'm in the mood for a re-read of the series this time with the short stories in chronological order I've put Ship of Magic down for now. I liked what I read, but just wasn't in the mood so I'll pick up again later. And I DNF'D Mistborn The Final Empire, I'm just not interested.

I feel it just has this fantasy feel without much reliance on aspects that make sci-Fi what it is. Great reads there!! Prince of Nothing is for sure an intriguing series so far. Ed

Sounds like a wonderful start to the new year, hope that has set the tone well for the rest of 2023!! I just came across Mayflies on Scribd, so that is going to be read veryyy soon! Always looking for more stories that even slightly feel like A Little Life. And super exciting to hear that Red Sister was a hit, Ed! I recently finished the Book of the Ice and that has made me want to reread Book of the Ancestor, it's such a great series!! Also can't believe I haven't checked out Stormdancer yet, because I love Nevernight and EotV! Gonna bump it up the priority list again, especially after hearing that it has steampunk vibes and a strong female MC. My favourite read of January was Of War and Ruin, which I devoured in 5 days... oops. But I also really adored my first ever read of A Game of Thrones, that totally lived up to the hype! Great wrap-up guys!!

You two are inspiring! What great reading pace. I am in the middle of Hunger of the Gods! (Rooting for Team Ulfrir of course). Also listening to Stephen Aryan's, The Coward. Plus I'm writing an epic fantasy of my own. Would love to see you roast/rate a list of fantasy character names. Makes me worry for my own, I tend to stick to a few syllables maximum. Cheers lads!

@@thebrothersgwynne I would say Epic Fantasy. Second world, dark-age tech in a more tropical setting. Classic quest/ found family vibes. Been a blast writing. This will be my first completed story, so your note about re-reading some Gemmell for inspiration definitely stuck with me. I need to get some Gemmel under my belt!

Ed, have you watched Godless? It was one that surprised me by how much I liked it. And though I'm an individualist and don't look for feminist things, it would doubtless be described as feminist lol. I don't know if you saw my message, Ed, but I was catching up on Expedition Unknown and in season 8 episode 5 (on Prime) it is titled "The Warrior Queen's Treasure". It's Boudica! A search for her hoard and her burial spot. I had been have a tough few months of pain, then I got sick for a few weeks, my thyroid has gone haywire. I have not been in a good head space, plus it's been cold and miserable here, nothing has been interesting. Expedition Unknown started pulling me out of it and when I saw the episode on Boudica I got so excited to tell you about it lol. I am feeling much better now and will hopefully start reading again soon. I hope you're all recovered as well. On Westerns, have you looked at Butcher's Crossing by John Williams? I haven't read it yet, but it has good ratings. I'm just waiting for Will to read Lonesome Dove and join the club. Later, book friends 👋
