Most staff at Japanese arcades will actually do this if they see you put enough money into the machine. After a certain point they want to make sure you don't leave frustrated, and they'll set up the machine to be easier to win.

The thing I like the most about this is like, yeah, crane games are rigged to make you spend more but the staff WANTS you to win, they want you to have fun they're so sweet

The difference between these crane game places and actual casinos is that the crane game staff are trained to effectively give you the prizes once it is clear you have spent enough money at a machine to clearly be profitable. They want you to keep playing other cranes, not get pissed off at a single crane and then not come back. Online crane game sites even go so far as to program the "assist" as a guaranteed thing after using X amount of plays. The only issue is when it comes to the truly decent prizes on relatively easy to conquer machines, where "pro players" farm the prizes for scalping. This is usually countered by only letting one prize out of those machines per player per day. When you are putting in $60+ for a $10-15 anime figure, it is in the store's interest to just give you the figure so that way you are more willing to do the same to another machine. Connor (and the people he brings) get more assistance than a usual player would because he is a frequent player that is highly recognizable. When staff see you coming in relatively often and dropping TONS of money each trip, they know that being more liberal with the help will pay off in the long run, regardless if the money is being drained on that particular crane or not. They also see the cameras and know that they are effectively getting free advertisement. The more that the influencers win, the better that the store appears as a good place to win prizes.

@@Skye_Writer Pretty much every arcade in Japan will do it, but how often depends on the particular staff member and how busy they are. If the place isn't that busy and it is easy to keep track of specific customers, then it is easier to provide assistance. If the place is busy and you aren't drawing attention to your agony by not being overly expressive, then it is quite easy for a staff member to just assume that you must be doing "okay" and keep walking. Don't forget that the staff have to keep patrolling and restocking machines after almost every win, so it is quite easy to just not notice that a customer has been at a single machine for an ungodly amount of time.

I really want to try Japanese rhythm games but I feel like I'd have to move there. I'd want to actually get good at them--not sweaty tryhard good, but at least feel like I can play some songs--and there seems to be so many interesting ones. Plus I'd get distracted with crane games and pachinko parlors on the way there. 😅

As a claw machine owner, let me tell you how these things work There are 3 stregnth settings They are labled by Vr being Variable Resistor Vr1: This is the stregnth when it first grabs the item, usually set this to a high number to grab it Vr2: This is the stregnth at once it reaches the top, some people like to set this to a high amount to make it more convincing, others like to make people rage and set this to an extremely low setting Vr3: This is the stregnth at which it is moving, usually set to a really low value Pay To Win: There is a dip switch on the mainboard that enables this, It will be weak until the set amount of money has been put into the machine at which point it finally switches onto high power and you will win no matter what unless you are really bad at crane games. This is the mode we use when placing machines, so yes, they are rigged.
