Thanks for this news report.. I am a native of the USA and have live in Tokyo, now more than 12 consecutive years (18 years in total) and even with the threat of these types of earthquakes.. I have no thoughts or plans of leaving. The remarks in the news report,about the people remaining calm, It’s not because of any authoritarian pressure, but the Japanese spirit of harmony and respect and consideration of not only fellow humans, but all life in general. When you see in the interviews of, especially the elders, Notice a smile on their face when they talk about how they lost everything… Don’t think it’s because they’re happy… Even in that moment, they are caring about your feelings… That they don’t evoke pity, or make your heart burdened.. There are those who will say.. but what about this… and what about that… …To them I say back, even with admitted imperfections… show me another society that, on the whole, can compare. In the coming days, and weeks.. Please take notice of the absence of reports of looting. Japan, and the Japanese people, sets the example for the world, for how to behave in such times of disaster. I love Japan, Thank you for your prayers, and support.

The death toll is about 60 as of now. An earthquake of the same magnitude killed 50,000 people in Turkey. This level of damage is always experienced by the Japanese. There is a difference in earthquake resistance between Japanese buildings built to legal standards after June 1981 and those built before that date. For wooden houses, the law was revised in 2000, and the standard is required to the extent that the house will not collapse even if the Mercalli seismic intensity is 12 (except for the collapse of furniture in the room).
