At last, a defender combining both superb attacking skills and variation along with amazing service. Masato Shiono, remember this name in the future...

It's important to remember that the young Chinese players are always most impressive against their veteran teammates. Fan Zhendong has played splendidly against Ma Long, Zhang Jike, Wang Hao, etc. yet barely escaped Joao Monteiro at WTTC. In the same way, Xu Chenchao was able to take on Wang Liqin and yet fall flat against Masato. Nonetheless, an impressive run by Shiono who will no doubt be welcomed into the top 50 world ranking!

very impresive match. opponent fail to achieve full topspin atteck against Choppers. Shiono is the Master of Chops with lots of bkspin. Although no Choppers at top world ranking, He is a complete modern defender equipped with offensive attack. Hope to see future top ranking spot, is a modern defender.

yep red side is pimples black is rubber. he generally changes in order to confuse the opponent and does so when receiving in order to have heavier backspin on the return making it more difficult to attack with power

There are so few strong defensive players today. Shiono has been around awhile but he might be hitting his peak right now. He rarely uses a topspin backhand though, which makes him easier o prepare for.

On a cool analysis, Shiono plays mainly downward spin volley to his opponents, mixed with shrewd counter attack where chances arise. Xu Chenhao need to observe and learn from their senior Chinese players playing against such type of opponents. Even Ding Ling could lose to young girl Hu Limei whose style is similar to Wu Yang. China is now using some world competitions to bring up the juniors, and not always Ma Lin, Wang Liqin.

Shiono is a defender in the tradition of Koji Matsushita. Their styles are similar and they're about the same size. Shiono might even be slightly more aggressive with his forehand.

Shiono has all the technical abilities of Koji, for sure. In some ways maybe even better. He just needs to be polished a little - there's some awkwardness in returning serves, or when switching between attack and defense, and it shows that he's not comfortable with smashing against lobs. Too bad he never got the rigor and opportunities of being a top player of the Japanese team, but he definitely had respectable accomplishments given he has a career outside of table tennis.

This is not anti-chinese, but it is very nice to see a japan player to win the finale over a chinese because i hope games like this will create more tension in future....

I remember watching Wang Liqin lose to Chen Weixing in a match without retiring. I don't remember when it was, but yes I agree that Wang does really well against choppers.

I remember him losing against chen weixing in 2005 and he wasn't injured. But I agree, I think Wang Liqin would have won, too much experience. I remember him sweeping Joo See Hyuk at the wttc 2008

I think your statemente is not accurate... for example he lost to chen weixing in 2007 during kwait (or qatar, i don't remember) open, and to joo se hyuk in kwait (or quatar, I always make confusion :D ) open 2009. By the way, he's really strong against defenders and his maches are a pleasure to watch (check the matches against joo in tabletennisphotos channels...)

Interesting. Quite surprise Kenta and Koki could lose to MS, they should know him quite well, as MS is 27 and not new player to them. Xu is only 18 and lacks of experience to MS's style, that's not big surprise. It could be interesting later to see if MS has chance to meet real top players like Ma Long, Xu Xin, Zhang Jike.

Yeah and I remember WLQ lost to Joo one time in Kuwait (or Quarter) Open... Think it was in 2009 or 2010... Other than those 2 losses, I don't think he lost to any chopper...

Xu obviously never practiced against choppers, which allowed Shiono to win so easily. I don't think Shiono would stand any chance against any "standard" Chinese players. He played a pretty all-rounded game though.

They re missing Joo See Hyuk...they forgot how to play against chopper. And the camera angle ist still bad....90% from behind the players...the impressive view was the angle from the side! But congrats to Masato :-)

How the hell could Xu got pass Wang Liqin with this kind of performance? Btw, I'm pretty sure Wang would have won against Masato since Wang in his career NEVER lost a match to a chopper (Well there is one time he lost because he was injured and retired the match).
