When the United States finished retaliating against Japan for the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan had lost 93% of its steel industry, over 30% of its industrial equipment, a quarter of all buildings and infrastructure, and over 80% of its ships. Furthermore, all major cities in Japan lay in ruins, the GDP was unrecognizable, the yen had no value or use, and the Japanese citizens were in poverty. Moreover, hunger loomed as food couldn't be found at any price.
But miracles happen: within about ten years after the defeat, Japan fully recovered from the war, and another twenty years later began not just approaching the USA but even economically hunting for their money.
