Making a packed lunch for your children to take to school is a chore performed by parents around the world. But in Japan, it is not just the taste and healthiness of the meal that is important - but how it looks. From BBC

why all the negative comments? I grew up in Australia with a Japanese mum. Asian food is very displeasing to look at as a picky child. its not a waste of time to prepare food visually. come on restaurants do it and this is just a way to entice children to eat. I loved my mum molding rice for me and if it fell apart (no sticky rice in Aust in 80-90s) I would get extremely upset. I wanted a round ball on my plate! 😂 I remember all the vegetables were cut into flowers but come teen years I just ate whatever and didn't care anymore

There is a huge difference between spending a couple of minutes to garnish a meal so it looks nice, and standing up at 4 a.m. to create an oversophisticated Michael Jackson bento for a toddler just to impress the other toddlers' mothers.
@endlessdelirium7 жыл бұрын
Senga Sengana She says it's fun though, so who are you to judge? I suppose it's a form of art to her and she doesn't mind spending a couple of hours to make Michael Jackson's face. I think the moms in her class are only learning more basic designs.

My mom used to leave me little lunch box pre written notes and a pack of candy when she made my "tin foiled sandwich" and my broken Pringles and juice box and my oxidized sliced apples and it was still delicious and made me feel special because most kids ate school lunches and my mom took the time out to prepare a lunch for me and my sisters with her being an engineer and my dad being a deployed military personnel I know she dealt with a lot of stress but still showed us love .

Lori Anne my mom would always put in special little notes in mine and my brothers lunch. One day she forgot and I had a really bad panic attack cuz at the time I had separation anxiety I was 5-6 years old. She rushed over and spent the lunch with me to make up for it. Sadly I lost her 2 years ago but ur comment reminded me of this memory so thank you!😊

These children will grow up to be the healthiest adults in the world too with the longest life-spans of any country although with none of the western-style health issues or complications like obesity, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and/or cancer, etc. Didya hear that Michelle Obama??

Here in india, we have a wholesome lunch. Its usually rice with a curry (usually with 2 or 3 veggies or chicken/mutton) another steamed or cooked vegetable. I think i dare say, that's enough a healthy food for kids or adults alike.

I’ve homeschooled since kindergarten and my son is in 8th grade. I wanted a prep before college. The school setting. I love packing his lunch! I was put a little gum or suckers for his friends at his table. I can’t do anything to fun. But his friends all envy his lunches. I didn’t have the luxury of a packed lunch. School lunch was all I could have and it was awful! In grade school I had packed middle and high school purchases. I always loved the packed lunches!

I suspect that you don't do a portrait every day. It might be Michael Jackson or Barack Obama once or twice a year, and Totoro and Hello Kitty and a panda the rest of the year. In the US of course we'd have to include the occasional eagle, gun, Mickey Mouse, and pot leaf.
@Adindastrawberry7 жыл бұрын
I laughed reading some comments here. It does not take more than 3mins to shape a totoro or hello kitty rice. All you need is a piece of cling film, a stamp cutter which you can cut the seaweed into circles for the eyes. You can snip few slices of tomato or radish or any favourite vegetables. Rice can be cooked beforehand in a rice cooker, omelette can be fried while waiting for your child to get ready for school and sausage can be cut into octopus shapes and fry for 3-4mins. I cook breakfast and prepare lunchbox for my husband on a daily basis. An extra 5-10mins early in the morning is nothing compared to £5 per meal if he spend for lunch. At the end of the month, we saved a lot. What I prepared are not bento but love.. hehe..
