Germany and the United States were clearly stronger teams than Japan. But Japan overcame them. It was a miracle. Maruyama scored a valuable goal against Germany. She used to belong to a team at the Fukushima nuclear power plant company. Mr. Yoshida was Maruyama's boss. He took great care of Maruyama and encouraged her to leave the team and challenge abroad. Every time she returned to Japan, Mr. Yoshida invited her to yakiniku restaurants and became a counselor for her various worries. Then, in 2011, a huge tsunami struck Japan, causing the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to melt down. Mr.Yoshida did his best as a field leader in dealing with that difficult nuclear accident. Maruyama did her best, believing that if she played an active part in WC, she would give courage to Japan. After winning the WC, Maruyama received a "Congratulations" message from Yoshida. However, she did not contact him directly because she was concerned about Yoshida, who was busy responding to the nuclear accident. Yoshida died of cancer without Maruyama meeting Yoshida. After retiring from soccer, Maruyama has been active as a comedian. However, Maruyama against Germany was not a comedian but a brave player.

Remember deciding to follow Football seriously while being unaware that the Men's 2010 FIFA already concluded way after deciding to pursue the sport as a fan. So I decided to follow The Women's 2011 World Cup to understand the sport/tournament itself. Little did I know I was gonna follow an underdog team defeating top tier contenders & champions to reach their dream. After 2 Men's and 2 Women's FIFA tournaments later I still pick this tournament as my favorite and unsurprisingly the most inspiring.
