Growing up we had an Akita, named Taro. He didn’t do anything incredible unlike famous Hachiko but even to the day he died, he squeezed out all his strength to make sure that he welcomed me back home from the school. I pet him and asked him not to bother to do his ritual of welcoming me back home, get up on his feet, make a few turn arounds and kiss me all over my face then roll over. It’s been decades since he passed away and I’ve lived with other dogs whole my life other than my time away for college and job search time. All my dogs have been special but I feel as I learnt to respect and love them from Taro.

If you are thinking of getting an Akita I have a few negative qualities to point out - They are EXTREMELY stubborn. Commands aren't commands, they are suggestions - They are independent minded, so they will question what you get them to do. With this though you get a lot of personality, it feels like another person in the house as the video said. - Really high prey drive. Little dogs, cats or any small creature that moves is most often seen as prey and they will hunt it. So best if there are no other animals in the house. - Up until the age of 2 they are usually fine around other dogs. After that they can become very dominant aggressive, socializing regularly can help prevent this. No guarantee. - Strong, extremely powerful jaw. If not properly cared for they can be very dangerous dogs. - Don't play games, most of the time. So no fetch. They might chase a ball if they feel like it. - With these qualities be prepared to never be able to let your Akita off leash, and have to muzzle it (some countries it is law) - NOT FOR NOVICE OWNERS! They look cute, but are extremely high maintenance. A lot of these qualities stem from the breeds history, they are a very primitive (at least 1,000 years old) and that is why they maintain a lot of qualities similar to a wolf. This is all coming from my experience owning an Akita. I love our girl, but she can be difficult to deal with at times and many Akita are appearing in shelters (we adopted a 7.5 year old one) b/c people can't care for them. So just want to warn any potential owners.

nukiepie there are breeds that are extremely easy to raise/train (golden retriever) and breeds like this that are best left to much more experienced dog owners. Certain breeds have different quirks, Goldens love to please and will do basically anything they think you’ll like while this is not the case for every dog breed. This is an incredibly stubborn and independent breed that requires FAR more work to train, socialize and handle than “easier” breeds. I’ve seen it time and time again with my own dog. We go to the park and meet people who didn’t properly research and get a breed that met their needs. I’ve seen too many aggressive huskies and German Shepherds that the owners blamed the dog for the owner’s lack of ability. Germans and Huskies are known as easier breeds compared to this breed. This is a breed that could increase and/or jeopardize your insurance premiums because it can be temperamental. It’s an amazing breed, but only in the hands of the right owner and novice owners generally won’t fit that bill. Don’t get a dog breed because it looks cool or has a famous story behind it, get a dog that suits both you AND the dog. I would LOVE one of these dogs, but know that my inexperience would not be right for the dog. If you are taking offense to OP, PLEASE do not think of getting this breed. You have to start dog ownership by picking a dog breed that works with your skill level, it’s only fair for the dog. Being offended by a warning that this breed is difficult means it probably is not at all the right breed for you. You will need lots of patience and time for this breed, far more than most.

@@esthersalvatierra3369 The Akita's rarely bark even when someone rings the door bell. They are not velcro dogs meaning they will be in the general area watching you and family. They are loving and playful too. In regards to training, they'll try to please you at first but they get bored pretty easy...so make it fun and reward them. Don't be harsh in correcting but be very consistent. It will win every time. Also they don't get along with the same gender...can't have two females or two males together. It can happen but it's rare. Never leave an Akita in the yard, they have to be inside with you. Otherwise they can turn feral. This is one breed who doesn't need a human to survive. It's imperative that you and family be the boss over them. Don't be mean, be firm. I'm trying not to scare you but impress upon you the importance about them.

Even so, my family and I have fallen in love with him, and he is nothing but loyal and loving. He had once heard my little sister screaming and he ran over in front of her, barking at anyone who had walked near that he didn’t know. He’s friendly to everyone who visits, smiling and circling them. Though many people I know may be afraid of Akita’s for their aggression towards other dogs, and sometimes even other people, he’s just the biggest sweetheart I know.

I want one so badly. I am going to start saving money for one. Update: I got one! He is absolute heaven and very family oriented. He suffered a trauma from the previous owners and I got him when he was 4 months old so he is untrusting towards strangers but we made progress on that. He loves playing with my cat and is very playful with other dogs unless they attack him. He is a bit clumsy when it comes to stairs but that's his charm. I am hopeful to get a female sometime in the future. We are doing great so far and I am so happy I got him to relax and trust everyone in the family. @@HaiMalonBodoh In my country, TV stations often featured Japan Video Topics to fill their show slots on non-prime time hours (time slots that no commercial advertisers would be willing to pay for ads). Like during the 3 PM in the afternoon and after 11 PM They also featured this single hour long Australian tourism video. But Japan Video Topic are the best because they are more varied and interesting.

Had a neighbor with an Akita once. Sister tried petting it while it was under our trampoline (the neighborhoods backyards were connected and separated by bushes so the dog always came over) and it bit a chunk out of my sisters left eye. What a faithful dog!

Is anyone gonna acknowledge what is clearly Yoshihiro Takahashi artwork on the wall at 3:03? No? Just me?? (Takahashi is extremely well-known for drawing and writing manga that's centered around Akita dogs)

@@jaypostromboli-jpgamertv-457 Honestly, I'd love to see just about any modern adaptation of this stuff. If the success of that dororo reboot says anything, I think there could definitely be a market for it.

My dog likes to say hello to almost every dog he sees on the street and most of those experiences are good and friendly, except with Akitas. I’ve never seen other dogs snap with such sheer hostility. Frankly, if I see an Akita, I cross to the other side of the street...

Poor Hachiko, his master (a doctor) would get off the train and meet Hachiko and they'd walk home. One day the doctor never came home, he died randomly (some kind of brain hemrage or heart attack). Everyday Hachiko would come to the station and wait, an hour later when his master was not there he'd go along the street and go back to his home (a turned over bin). The people first saw Hachiko as a dirty thing and would shew him away but eventually they learned of what happened to his master and they realised the loyalty of Hachiko, he became a local celebrity. They fed Hachiko and you'd think he'd go live with them, but no, Hachiko stayed loyal to his dead master, even though he had people wanted to adopt him. And one day, Hachiko didnt show up to the station, he'd never been late before, and he was found dead, in an alley. Hachiko had died of a bowl disease.

Descending from regional hunting dogs, the Japanese Akitainu was initially restored and preserved by dedicated breeders in the Akitainu Hozonkai (Akita Dog Preservation Society; AKIHO). The breed is known for its striking appearance and its physical and mental agility.
