Childbearing seems to be in the decrease globally in the developed world. While we have niche dating apps on our cell phones to net a potential date and perhaps embark on a relationship, younger generations tend to miss out on the next steps of marriage and having babies. Thus many nations are recording lower birth-rate figures, and nowhere is this more noticeable than in Japan. But is it just the lack of marriages that is responsible for the drop of 1 million people in Japan’s population statistics? Or are other factors at play? why is Japan’s population decreasing?

Currently living and working in Japan, I can tell you the REAL reason. Japanese work culture. It's the base of the vast majority of problems in this country. People don't see a point in sex or getting married because they spend the majority of each day at work. It is normal to work 10-12+ hours a day followed by work parties or other work related events. The whole "gambare" attitude here is killing the country.

I would agree. Also live and work in Japan. I would also add that Japan is a very homogeneous society, Japan for the Japanese (which I totally get) they are very kind to foreign tourists but when you live here you see a totally different side. Unfortunately this leads to a lack of innovation and fresh ideas outsiders can bring. There is a staunch stubbornness here to any kind of change.

It seems there's a lot of stigma attached to living with you parents in the west. In asian countries its fairly normal. In Asian countries if you are living with your parents it doesn't mean that you don't have a job or aren't successful its just that children take care of their parents at the old age rather that letting them live alone.

Kirzuo As an adult I agree this is an important issue as it shows flaws in capitalism and is an allegory to the Red Revolution as spongebob representing the worker. And krabs being the bourgeois who expose the workers and stopped from revolutionizing means of production. As sponge bob is stuck with the spatula and frying Krabby patties. The bourgeois will not keep the workers of the world like spongebob in their chains of the bourgeoisie society we live in now. WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!

The real reason is super long work hours, long commutes, high stress jobs, some of the highest suicide rate and depression rates in the world and a traditional idea of the mother giving up her career for children. Companies will also often not hire mothers. No one likes those answer though.

You forgot that in Japan a lot Japanese are working alot of hours each day and there's other works two job's just to cover payments and life goals. That's why many are stressed out when coming out from work. Also some can't make it in their home and just get a hotel to sleep till they go back up and continue working. It's the real reason why population growth is decreasing and last not forget the suicide rate there as well.

@@inexpertxennial6067 true but the government laws are different from other countries. And I think in my opinion is that they are doing this to control human populations because it was getting to crowded in city areas. That's why prices goes up when it comes to renting a apartment of your own and having a family with it is very hard to handle to cover the bills while feeding everyone. That's why some Japanese people that do business travel outside of their own countries to make money to help support their families. but again government is not doing anything but only dropping retirement age to 56 years old.

It's also because women there aren't given much social acceptance to work after getting married. So most women there don't wanna marry since there is no co-dependent relationship there. Plus both men and women have really screwed ideas about each other there. This is an interesting question you've made. Lets say this is true, 100 or less years from now, Japaneses do go 'extinct' so to speak, so.....what will happen to the land of Japan? Or, even if all the population just up and leaves, many Japaneses are immigrating to either Australia or the U.S.A., so the question remains, what will happen to the land of Japan in either scenario? Could the nation that claims, "We do have the most Japanese decent" or in the case of 'up and leaving' say, "We have the most 'native born' Japanese" and claim the land that way? Has this even ever happened in Human history before? Would or could there be a war over it? Or, lets say the Japanese population is all gone, but the problems between North and South Korea, with China and the U.S. remain, could the population of South Korea move to Japan and claim a new nation, how would that affect the political landscape, I wonder?

Japan is so focused on having a great career at a young age that the stress starts at a young age. When they are kids, you are sent to various after school programs and study really hard to get into college. Once you are in college, you have to focus on having a great career. The culture isn't relaxed at all. Korea is currently decreasing their population too. I am currently working in Korea and these poor children do nothing but school and study all week long. No mini vacations to hike or weekend trips to a nearby city or quick playground play date. It's quite sad. To be the top in education comes with a price. Coming from America, I guess it is worth not being number one in education if it means kids can be kids.

No one in Japan considers family to be first and most valuable thing. If you ask a Japanese he will definitely say work is most important. Their mindsets are stuck in post war times where murica nuked them and they had no choice to rebuild the country by working extra hard. If you work from 8 till 22 you don't have time for family at all. Try riding a 22:00 train in Japan and look at those half-dead office zombies in business suits. Bet you won't be able to see a scene like this in any country. Average salary in Japan is around $2000 now usually with 30 hours of overwork per month already included in this salary, meaning if you don't do these 30 hours overwork you would get even less. Which is ridiculous since you can just go and do baito and get $1500 a month much easier without overworking like a mule. Some do overwork because they want extra money (sometimes overwork isn't even paid at all, google "black company"). Sometimes people overwork simply because leaving earlier than your boss is considered very rude and is a sure way to make everyone in the company hate you fast. And that boss will be sitting there until last train because he has an angry wife at home he doesn't wanna see. I'm not even starting about how japan is all about your image and reputation. No one cares what you can do and what person you are. Everyone cares only about how low can you bow and how hard can you kick your boss' ass by sitting there being unproductive while pretending to be working. Yay for totally not-asinine Japanese work culture. Half of Japan's problems would be easily solved if Japanese didn't apply their Bushido mentality to modern lifestyle. But it will never happen since children are brainwashed by schools since young age into these "replaceable gears of the society, where you have to suppress your emotions and never voice your opinion, while enduring all the shit flying towards you". The amount of pressure from society is hard to explain if you never been to an asian country before. And you wonder why the suicide rate is so high... Japan is awesome if you a short term visitor. But if you stay and live here you will start seeing this fucked up society from inside and will start questioning why would anyone wanna live in this depression-land to begin with. It's especially mind boggling to me when americans move to japan. The salary in usa is so much higher. You can find a good job where you and your skills will be valuable and won't be treated like a worthless drone. You won't be living in a room/house the size of a wardrobe and you will have all the time with your family. Your children won't be bullied and treated like dirty peasant half-bloods. And you won't have to deal with general animosity by the locals to you as an alien. Of course, on the positive side you get to live in a very safe country, eat delicious food and travel to beautiful places, but the price you have to pay for this isn't worth it. Ask native English speakers who work as teachers here in Japan for example what shit they have to go through on daily basis. Even Japanese people themselves who happen to go live abroad tend to never come back to their previous prison-like life in Japan..

All valid points, but you forgot the most important one. Young adults in Japan are pressured to work themselves to death. Which means they have little to no time for social activities other than with colleagues or family. Abenomics also failed spectacularly, so thats another thing making people reluctant to get married. Thanks to the current state of politics, Marriage = Much more expensive than being single. Japanese culture is still very patriarchal, and as a result women there are pretty squemish about tying the knot. (Because the wife is expected to raise children.)
@Xeranx
@Xeranx 6 жыл бұрын
I don't see Japanese culture as being patriarchal being a good reason for women being "squeamish" of marriage. Housewives, as I've been told, get their husbands pay and give him an allowance. He works over 60 hours a weak and is essentially taxed by his wife for the family. This isn't beyond the norm as even in the US women are responsible for the household spending and majority of that money, if husband/man isn't the sole provider, comes from said husband/man. Patriarchal norms are men protect and provide for their wives and children.

Long working hours , high cost of living . Go home tired sleep . I heard many ppl sleep in some lan cafe every night and go to work in the morning . And its cheaper than renting an apartment to live in . People are seeking romance/lust but not love and marriage itself. Just the thought of supporting ur wife and child gets ur mind crazy . Cause after you got ur family to support you have not much left to spend on ur hobby on things you wants to enjoy. Its a monotonous lifestyle until ur children are old enough to support you . By that time you're too old to do the things you always wanted to do. I can imagine why they feel more happy being single . They want to be happy more than anything

What about the fact that many Japanese people work 16-20 hour shifts, 6-7 days a week? A lot of them literally don't have the time for a relationship or a family. If they don't work these ridiculous shifts, they get viewed as lazy or unproductive and may get shunned from society. Also the country has a high suicide rate due to high societal pressure, having to get the best education and job possible and work and much as possible or risk becoming an outcast.

They are against immigration because they treat it as tainting their race. Especially to the government. The civilians don't give a crap, but the government refuses to allow it. There are tales of immigrants being treated like second-class citizens by the conservative government despite marrying into Japanese households. That somehow the government is the reason why they still haven't recovered. Japan's low birth rate is a consequence of Japan's economic history. Japan had positive population growth during the economic boom years from about 1950 to 1990, when their economy was powered by exports of consumer goods. They were the world's workshop in a similar manner to Britain in the 19th Century. Starting in the 1990s, the rest of Asia started copying Japan's example, and Japan lost increasing amounts of its export markets to China and other low-cost newly industrializing competitors in Asia. Japan tries to stay ahead of the pack in technology and quality, but that's an expensive investment which they will lose anyway as China and the others catch up. Japan is one of the most expensive countries to live in, so Japanese factories and workers simply can't afford to compete with other Asian factories and workers in terms of costs and wages. So Japan has basically fallen into permanent recession. They tried to stimulate the economy with heavy deficit spending, but that has failed miserably, and it has only ruined Japan's once-perfect financial record with a huge national debt. The result of all that is economic death for Japanese employers and workers. Businesses failing, factories moving to China, remaining factories downsizing and automating. Workers being forced to take low-skilled, low-paying, part-time, temporary jobs, far below their education level. This is happening despite today's young generation being the most educated generation ever. Unemployed and underemployed young Japanese people by the millions are being forced to delay marriage and stay at home with their parents for years after they finish school. It gives them the opportunity to experiment with Bohemian lifestyles like young Westerners do, but if they had a choice, most young Japanese would rather have the same career opportunities their parents had. How are they supposed to maintain a replacement birth rate when they can't even support themselves? Anyone who wants young Japanese people to get married and reproduce only needs to start a business in Japan, hire lots of young people, and pay them a decent wage. Until that happens, a declining population is what Japan needs, and to oppose it would only make things worse. A smaller Japanese population is better than a poor Japan.
@jeaneljaylamputi2215
@jeaneljaylamputi2215 5 жыл бұрын
That's proper, since it's better to decrease the next generation of future consumers and unemployed people through declining birth rate. In that way, their economy becomes sustainable in the future years.

My country and the region around my country suffer with population decrease, but for different reasons. My country (Macedonia) has a population of about 2 million people. Thousands of people have left my country to seek a better life in Western Europe, North America or Australia. Neighboring Bulgaria is in a worse situation. They used to have almost 9 million people in 1991. In the last population survey back in 2011 counted 7.1 million people in Bulgaria. Now it's estimated that there are only 5 million people in Bulgaria. When they entered the EU, about 2 million Bulgarians left Bulgaria to seek a better life in other EU countries.

Korea - 1.26 Poland - 1.36 Croatia - 1.40 And these are the countries that have way smaller population than Japan and you worry about Japan which has over 127 million people? Seriously? Geri Jokub But those immigrants would be German or their descendants will. Immigration is usually beneficial long term and a burden in the short term. There’s not any known caliphates in the world today and there’s only been 6 or 7 in ancient human history. @@blindeagleace3629, The main problem is that the immigrants (I'm talking about the ones from the middle east and Africa) are reproducing at a higher rate than the ethnic germans, which means that in the long run, even if their fertility rates will go up, Germany will no longer be ethnically german (that includes mixed german people as well). Multiculturalism just doesn't work in Europe, whether you like that or not. The majority of immigrants are not willing to integrate into their society, which is an endangerment for german language, culture, traditions, religion and their gene pool. I also don't see the value in family or having significant other . Yes I am shy and I'm not that confident in relationships. Here, in the United States, having a partner is like a requirement in this society . No one should be obligated to find the person that "completes you" if you're happy being alone, the more power to you 👍

But what sane nation would have people en masse dreaming of work drawing lewd underage lolis being groped by giant purple tentacles? Hmm, this is an issue of utmost concern for the civilized world. The problem is very simple but extremely hard to fix. Those people have no tangible incentives to date and have kids, and you can easily make it worse with the wrong incentives. not only that , most peoples living arrangements are in no tangible danger and they have optimized a lot of things to be very convenient even for the most niche activities. I bet the reason people see no point in dealing with each other amounts to the expectations outweighing the convenience they already enjoy, simply put if another person doesn't add to my happiness (or likely wont) why would i deal with that?

It's not just women's fault. This is the country's social regression for advancing too fast and not advancing the social culture.
