I’ve always been under the impression that fresh produce and other things such as meat are more expensive in Japan but after watching your video I realized that is not always the case. Two things: I’m from Ontario, Canada and I can definitely say that I would spend less on groceries in Japan than I do at home for most items and get far better quality, lol. And two, I love how things seem to be sold in smaller packages meant for one or two people which is so perfect as a single person-everything here is geared towards multi buys and large quantities so I end up paying for way more than I actually need. There are Bloomberg & Reuters articles about American cattle ranchers losing market share in Japan to Canadian & Australian ranchers, after the US withdrew from TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) trade pact. Japanese consumers usually eat beef imported, because supply for Japanese Wagyu is limited; Japanese Wagyu is a special-occasion treat. Your discovery of Aeon having a cattle farming operation in Tasmania/Australia is interesting, and for me means (probably) that they like to have an integrated business to control & maintain quality standards.

AEON were already buying all their beef from Tasmania when I shopped there in 2005-2006 (i.e. a decade before the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement). My local Jusco had a video on a loop of Tasmanian cows on one of their ranches, and a signed letter from the Premier of Tasmania, translated into Japanese. I believe one of the reasons (at the time anyway) was that unlike European and US beef, Australian beef had no evidence of BSE (mad cow disease) so was one of the few places you could import beef from.

I'm Japanese. As in other countries, Japanese supermarkets range from cheap shops to very luxury stores. Even though it's the same product, the price is different. The supermarket in this video is common in Japan. Also, if you value quality, you can't underestimate the street fish stores, butcher shops, vegetable and fruit specialty stores, and tofu shops. Of course, they can't speak English, but they teach them very politely, and of course they are very careful about hygiene. It is not recommended to buy fresh food cheaply in Ameyoko without enough knowledge.

1:33 My cousin is a Virgo and doesn't do that LOL. While my mum is an Aquarius and always makes a list; she needs one. 198 yen isn't so bad that's 1.33 USD. Apples here are roughly 1-3 USD depending on what kind, sometimes 4 USD. Considering that it's local, it looks better than some American supermarkets that people complain have "plastic fruit," and other harmful stuff out of the country. 12:52 We sadly don't sell anything like that. The most we have are smaller (like four to five pieces at the most) for 11-15 USD. 19:40 That's the average in the USA. it's roughly 1.31 USD, which is common for those brand names. The cheaper ones are Yoplait or store brand. The ones I normally buy are like 1.21 20:22 The yellow yolks compared to the Japanese ones are because of the quality. Yellow is usually lower and you have no idea how they raised the hens. While in Japan, they go through strict guidelines compared to the USA which is why people can eat them raw with no problems compared to the USA. We cut a lot of corners in the USA The cereal, pads, and toilet paper suck though! I know the USA has a lot of sugary cereal but we have healthy options too more so than granola and corn flakes.

I do think it’s worth mentioning that all the prices you verbally list are BEFORE tax. So… the prices are actually more than what you say. Japan only adds the 10% GST at time of purchase! 😊😊

Yes, in Japan tax is applied to everything, unless there’s a tax exemption)like tax free shopping for tourists). You can see in the video two prices listed; the cheaper, often larger price on the label and the smaller price. The smaller price often on the right hand side of the label, is the true price, with tax applied.

Many people who do not know the daily life in Japan are surprised at the amount of plastic used for food products, but if you have a chance, please tell everyone that we try to recycle as much as possible, as garbage is classified into burnable garbage, non-burnable garbage, glass, ceramics, and recyclable garbage, instead of just throwing it all together. If you have a chance, please let everyone know that we try to recycle as much as possible. When you put out the garbage, you should also wash the containers before putting them out. Many small packages help prevent overeating. Also, small packages of rice, etc. are ideal for camping. Solo campbings are very popular in Japan right now, so they are very convenient.

Supermarket prices in Greece are pretty much the same. The bigger differences are in meat and fish. Japanese is way cheaper. Even though we share a very different culture around fish. Here we mostly buy freshly caught straight from the fishermen, which is very much expensive, or the most affordable option is buying frozen which I think is still more expensive that the Japanese supermarket prices. The bento food and snacks is ridiculously cheap in Japan. But bottled alcohol...damn it's expensive in there. Everything else (rice, dairy, eggs, hygiene products) are pretty much the same. But I really don't know if the cost of living is similar in both countries to make an actual comparison with the 2023 stats and inflation. In here it feels like the prices went astronomically high. For a family of 4 the cost of groceries went up ~100% from 2019. But monthly income of minimum wage (which the majority of people earn) went up only by 20%.

So, my family used to live in Japan for about 6yrs. Those prices are a steal. That wagyu beef you showed for 1495 yen is about $11 dollars. Even the premium fruits are decently priced compared to if you bought them here in the US. The price would go up quite a bit.

As a person of Japanese decent, I appreciate the fact that Japan FINALLY moved away from using the pree sales tax price, so we do not have to calculate anymore. But I have a question, I see that there still fluctuates two prices on the price tag, can someone explain what the other higher price is? Is it still some kind of tax? I thought they changed to rules, so stores had to include all taxes and the price you see is the final total amount? Can someone explain? I don’t live in Japan..

The Aeon you went to is a bit expensive. Aeon stores differ in prices by location. I use OK Store and Gyomu Super for my groceries which is much cheaper, for the same quality. Eggs: unlike in Western countries, Japanese mainly eat eggs raw. Because if this, ALL eggs in Japan are washed in a Hypochlorous acid solution to kill off any salmonella bacteria.

Regarding strollers on trains, is it really okay for a child to ride the stroller while on the train? or is it frowned upon? How often do you just carry the baby and fold up the stroller while riding trains?

The only time you fold a stroller to put it on the train is the Shinkansen. Regular commuters- I never fold my stroller and that is where my child sits! Very common… great question!

I would say everything looks comparable or cheaper than the US when I do 100Y to 1 USD in my head, and then with the current low yen rates everything seems quite cheap. The quality of the items looks much higher though. Some things, like mushrooms, seem much cheaper, but fruits are a bit more expensive, nothing crazy though.

I live in Australia and I’m shocked how cheap the eggs are in Japan. Our currency is pretty much on parity (AUD 1 = JPY 100) and the free range eggs I buy are $13-16 for a dozen. Our fish/seafood is also more expensive, but our beef is cheaper. Excluding the fancy fruit and bentos, I think everything else is pretty similar.

Alcohol and cigarettes are taxed to extreme levels in Australia, for example Jonnie Walker Green you looked at was JPY 4,980 and in Australia try JPY 8,700 ! Unfortunately you can't buy sushi / fish packs in supermarkets to compare and couldn't help but notice no electronic security tags on the high end meats which is commonplace here in larger supermarkets.
