Japan travel / Kakeromajima island

The record of a trip to the Amami Islands in late March 2024 is now available.
In the third installment, we report on our trip to Kakeroma Island, which belongs to Setouchi Town, next to Amami Oshima.
Kakeroma Island is characterised by its clear blue sea, known as "Kakeroma blue", and has a population of around 1,000. The island boasts one of the highest populations among so-called 'secondary islands' that cannot be crossed directly from the mainland. There are two main ports on the island, Ikenma Port and Seso Port, which can be reached by ferry Kakeroma from Koniya Port on Amami Oshima.
The island had no shortage of attractions, including the emotional townscape that was the setting for the film Otoko wa Tsuraiyo, the sugar cane fields that dotted the villages and the dazzling white sand beaches.
As this trip was a day trip from Koniya, we only explored the area around Ikenma Port and the village of Shodon, but we were very impressed by the fusion of the beautiful nature and townscape. All the beaches we visited were beautiful and there were very few tourists, so I think this is a great place to seek healing in an extraordinary space. I would recommend staying at least one night on the island. I will definitely do so on my next visit.
