To be fair, England's own goal was the result of offensive pressure from Japan. Between losing the ball to the Japanese player who could then shoot & probably score, England's player decided to kick it over the cross bar. Without pressure, she could do it comfortably; under pressure, it was a fantastic goal, by the wrong side. :-(

Ah, absolutely gutted for the poor girl who was just stretching too much to get the contact she was going for on the OG. The thing that stands out though besides that has to be those 2 "penalties". Shocking stuff.

Of course an own-goal is heartbreaking, but England should never have gotten that penalty in the first place (what a dive!). Japan's PK was perhaps questionable, but while contact was initially made outside the box it clearly a fowl by the last defender, and the action continued into the box, so I think that one stands. As for the OG, if the English defender hadn't gotten a foot on that ball it was going straight to the Japanese striker with a 2-on-1 excellent chance at goal. So in all, Japan deserved to win.
@StellarFella
@StellarFella 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that threat should have never happened in the first place. Toni Duggan kicked the ball long downfield when she should have just killed the clock through possession and let the match go into overtime. Carney had just come in the match and Sampson kept Kirby on the bench. Bad subbing.

She has come through years and years of not playing in major tournaments. Finally she got her chance to be a stalwart at the heart of defense. They have shown so much strength in so many areas and so much depth. And for it all to be over in flash, to be all snatched away in the dying seconds has left us all speechless. On the off chance that any of the team read this: we're so proud of what you did. It was an unfortunate mistake. I was disappointed at the result, but the way the Japanese celebrated was infuriating; as if they really beat the English in a competitive match. It was a unlucky bounce for Basset; not a wonder strike.

Yeah, I agree... the Japanese team weren't playing that good either, they shouldn't celebrate as if it was the fruit of their hard work. England had so many chances and played very well. They deserved a better ending.

There are so many reasons for the own goal, but there is only one result. Japan won. That's all.

I hate how England lost. They so deserved it. Even though I'm a USA fan I was rooting for them. I feel like they've improved so much and exceeded everyone's expectations. I hope see more out of the lionesses.

In their last possession, Duggan failed to pass the ball across the field to an open Carney. Instead, she tried to force it to Jill Scott and Japan got possession of the ball going the other direction and we all know what happened next. England just had to hold possession a minute or so more and then go into overtime. Fran Kirby should have been brought into the game sooner and Karen Carney had just come in the game. She should have been brought in sooner as well. What a waste.

softclay4thought I will be rooting for England when they play Germany and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these English girls play in this tournament. My heart goes out to them and I look forward to seeing them play again in next summer's Olympics in Brazil.

You won't c them in next year's Olympics as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have to agree to a team GB. And the 3 associations have voted no to another team G.B.

Chris Walker Sorry to hear that. Perhaps they will be inclined to reconsider in light of this most recent success of team G.B.

softclay4thought It was DUGGAN trying to kick it long to WHITE instead of either controlling the ball and advancing it while running the clock down to certain overtime periods when CARNEY and maybe KIRBY would produce a stellar attack.

Gutted for them but definitely converted me to women's football. Brave, committed and with bags of ability. They have done England proud. The over inflated egos that are the England men's team could learn a lot from them.

Unfortunately, today sports should be spectacular to sell. It has become essentially commercial, being in last place the role of physical and mental healthy activity, and its educational and social responsibility function. The most spectacular is a play (better if with wounds and injuries) get more money the sports organization and its satellite business. Ethics and values do not participate in the game. The world is ruled by the power of money. So we continue to destroy our planet, dear friend. (Sorry for the bad translation)
