As someone said: It is very easy to criticize when you're not involved. They gave up from around 83' onwards. That's 83 minutes of actually trying, just 9 minutes shy of full time. We could've seen much worse, like Japan just passing around for 90 minutes, since Japan will also advance with a draw. You guys are just being overdramatic. It was the safest way for Japan to hope for an advance. Some people said Japan gambled, but it would be even more of a dangerous gamble if Japan had tried to score. Poland had no less than 5-6 players in the box in every Japanese attack. With such density coupled with their physical superiority, and competence, a goal for the Japanese was virtually impossible. They would fail and be overwhelmed with a very lethal Polish counterattack. Lewandowski was inches away from scoring. Twice. Both in counterattacks. Now that people ask why their Asian neighbor, Korea, played with stunning ferocity, yet Japan is the one who advances? Simple. Korea lost both matches. They played like a madman the last match because they no longer give a shit. They had nothing to lose, they were going home anyway. Japan, on the other hand, played beautifully and didn't lose their matches. They had nothing to gain and everything to lose (if) pressing the Polish for an attack. Put yourself in the boot of the Japanese manager. Anyone would have done the same.

Some people criticize Japan because of the boring game, but their priority was going through the stage, not meeting your expectation of showing an entertaining game at the risk of being disqualified. All the teams play to advance to the knockout stage. You may want to watch a 'good' game, but you can say so because you are not responsible for the result of the game. You can say "I'm sorry for the loss, it was a good game though," but don't forget that the World Cup is special for the players and the loss can decide the future of the players. It doesn't make sense to say that they should rather lose to entertain you instead of building another professional career. They have made tremendous efforts to be professional football players and to be selected for the national team. There is a huge difference form them between being kicked out and advancing to the knockout stage. The game against Poland is no easy task. Comparing the risk of losing another score or adding additional fouls / cards which would result in being disqualified to the risk of relying on Columbia's winning the game, Japan took the latter. They no doubt wanted to entertain people and win at the same time. But in this game, they had no choice to take a risk to go through. Japan's coach and all the players understood the situation and chose the tactics in exchange for taking all the bashing. The coach made a big bet. Japan lost the game but they won the ticket to the knockout stage. They will play full out in the next match.

@Sangjun Lee I see your point, but the fact is, Japan played strategically following the rule book. Again, the fact is Japan advanced. The fact is Japan had less fouls and yellow cards than Senegal. I don't mean to voice you, but if your country was in Japan's shoes, what they would have done? Also, how many yellow cards you received? 10 yellow cards and over 60 fouls. Second country was 30 fouls. Look, I cheered for Korea as well. They did try hard for the last game and I was very happy to see another asian team surprised the world. Anyway, if you wished Senegal to go, then tell them to get LESS yellow cards. This new rule showed how important to PLAY CLEAN. Or, do you want to hear me saying the country that got most yellow cards will not be able to participate next world cup. (for the fair play)

The problem was that the Japanese coach used mostly substitutes as if they're already through, could have played so much better with their regular lineup

Japan did what had to be done and did not break any rules. Any team would have done what Japan did, to keep their advantage. Had they tried to attack and conceded or collected cards, people would call them out for their stupidity. Had Senegal scored that 1 goal, people would also call Japan out for their stupidty. Japan had a guranteed advantage in that last few minutes to qualify, they gambled and it paid off. So well done Japan. Messi did the same by wasting time to keep their advantage, England did the same against Belgium, every football team in the world have and would have done the same thing. So whoever thinks that Japan did a disgraceful act or against the spirit of football are wrong. Football requires brains alongside skills and so on, so lets not consider our players as dumb robots solely made for our entertainment. They're on a mission, they've used their brains and they've succeeded.
