JAPAN vs FRANCE | GOLD MEDAL MATCH | Highlights | Men's VNL 2024. France will play in front of their home fans at the Paris 2024 Games in a few weeks as not only the defending Olympic champions, but also the reigning Volleyball Nations League gold medalists after they triumphed in the sixth edition of the tournament, which came to an end on Sunday, in Łódź.
The French completed their VNL 2024 campaign in a strong way, taking down the second-best team in the FIVB World Rankings, Japan, 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23) in a packed Atlas Arena. Hosts Poland finished third and completed the podium.
Opposite Jean Patry was a difference-maker for France in the gold medal match, leading all scorers with 24 points (20 kills, three blocks, one ace). Kevin Tillie played a big role off the bench, tallying 13 points, while fellow outside hitter Yacine Louati added another 11.
“Japan are always tough opponents,” Patry celebrated. “They are very skilled, extremely patient and they dig everything. We try to be patient when we play them, but it’s always a challenge to remain focused the entire time. Winning the VNL is excellent in our preparation for the Paris Games, which is our main goal for the season. Our goal was to make it to the semifinals, so there’s nothing better than winning gold. We have a lot of guys who can come in and help the team and that’s one of our main strengths.”
On the Japanese side, captain Yuki Ishikawa had another excellent performance, leading the team with 17 points (all in kills), followed by opposite Yuji Nishida, who registered 11. Fellow opposite Kento Miyaura also got to double digits, coming off the bench to score ten points.
“We’re very happy that we made it to the final, but today it was a tough match,” Ishikawa reflected. “Congrats to France for winning the title. Playing in the final was a great experience for us and it will help as we prepare for the Olympics.”

Championship mindset that some lacks. Watch any France vs Poland match or any other top level match. Japan plays with a more positive energy but don't expect the same of other teams. In Le goffs mind this guy is trying to take something from him and his job is to not let him take. They are all friends that party together of the court so I don't see why fans who aren't even as close as them to each are crying about it.

Championship mindset. They are both fighting for the same thing. Yuki is seen as an enemy and Le Goff uses that intense energy to play better while also sending a clear message "you are not going to score on me". Next point, both teams know each off the court and spend personal time together with no bad feelings. So who are fans like yall to get angry in their place. When the players are closer to each other irl than any fan would be.

Congratulations to France but they know they didn't really earn it 100%. I hate to say this but Japan not having Ishikawa, Nishida and Sekita in the crucial moments really killed any chance of winning. Other guys simply don't have the experience and aptitude to perform consistently under pressure, especially for an important close game like 21-23. 8:30 I'm gonna get heat for saying this but I don't think Tomita should've been there instead of Ishikawa, neither should Fukatsu, Kai and even Otsuka. They needed Sekita's hands and maybe have both Miyaura and Nishida at the same time with one of them playing outside. And an exhausted Ishikawa at his 50% would be better than these guys. No hate, but they really needed that one. They needed their best of the best, there was no more practice games for the 3rd stringers. Japan's strategy really went off rail there.
