| Varna, Bulgaria, June 14, 2019 - Italy got back to winning ways in the 2019 FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League after beating Japan 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 29-27, 25-21) in the first match in Pool 10 in the Palace of Culture and Sport in Varna.
Italy coach Gianlorenzo Blengini: "We are happy with the result. It was a tough match. We had some troubles with the serving of Ishikawa and Otake. We had many possibilities to win the first set but at the end we did not manage to do it. I am happy that my team reacted in the perfect way after that and we continued focused enough to get the victory. All the matches for us are tough because we use some young players and our main goal in this kind of game is to gain experience and grow up."
Italy captain Simone Giannelli: "It was a difficult game. We didn't perform very well tonight but at the end we won and that's the most important thing. Every time we face Japan it is really hard because they have fantastic defence. We have to play better tomorrow in order to win again. Australia have some experienced competitors who play in Europe so it will be hard."
Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: "We won the first set but it was not an easy one for sure. Afterwards we were not focused enough to do something more. It was terrible. We had some good moments in the third set but they weren’t enough. It is really hard to play against a team with such good blockers. We have to be more concentrated in the upcoming games. Tomorrow we face Bulgaria. Last time we played against them we lost 0-3 so I hope to get at least a set now. We are prepared enough to overcome every team but we have to give our best."
Japan captain Masahiro Yanagida: "I am not completely satisfied with my performance, especially with the spike and block. According to the team performance we just couldn’t find the solution to put them in trouble. The game was really difficult and they played better than us. Tomorrow is a new day and we are ready to fight."
