While the 90s and early 2000s had iconic songs, there's definitely a switch in the quality of music, and that's mainly due to corporations trying to play it safe. If you think of any popular modern artist, nearly none of them actually write their own songs. Nowadays all modern songs sound pretty similar, to the point where it's hard to tell which artist even sang it. The 80s on the other hand bred creativity with its music, you had to stand out to make it on the radio. You could instantly tell which artist made which song from the unique style and voice.

Literally takes you back to a time when everything was going great. I went to a seminar that talked about city pop, j pop, viet pop, canto pop, and American pop. They talked about how around the time city pop was in its rising stage it was the same time Japan had a boom in economy and creativity :)
@sleuthentertainment5872
@sleuthentertainment5872 Жыл бұрын
From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, Japan gracefully rode the wave of prosperity. With unparalleled economic growth, a rural exodus at its peak and unprecedent cultural openness, Japan was the perfect breeding ground not only for imaging the future...but not needing to for; because its present was already perfect. Thus, with young office workers receiving exorbitant salaries and young couples being able to afford the buying of big houses, a cosmopolitan life arose around cities where everyone wanted to live. That was the Japanese dream: the Tokyo that never sleeps. During the day, let's go to the office; at night, let's go to discos and clubs that crowded the city. But a new Japan also needs new music, and that's where city pop came into play: music for the taste of young salarymen and students with a very bright future. A mixture of everything that hit in the West towards the end of the 70s taking the mixer and pressing in good doses of AOR, not a little bit of funk, a good jet of disco and the promotion of some shiny and energetic young star who could welcome a grateful touch of jazz and techno improvisation. Catchy, intense and cheerful sounds that the young-adult generation was going to set from then on. Television and radio promoted this "new" genre as if it was the "revolution of the century".

Is it just me or was 80’s anime style and music better than today? Their vibe was beautiful! 💕✨

I think the music is about the same. Compared to music today, it feels like 80's music is definitely more emotional and authentic, although a big part of that is the difference between momentary popularity and being recognized by later generations as great music. As for the anime aesthetic, I think it is very pretty and there are some shows that pull it off incredibly, but part of it is definitely nostalgia (plus putting it in an amv with this music is kind of cheating in terms of emotional appeal). While a lot of anime today doesn't have animation that gives it a lot of personality, there are still some incredibly animated shows that couldn't exist in the 80's such as Violet Evergarden, Land of the Lustrous, Fate S/N: UBW, and Demon Slayer (ig anything by Ufotable lol).

Listening to these songs over the last few months...and now that I'm finally in Japan for the first time, listening to "Stay with me" while I look out my hotel window onto the Tokyo skyline...just hits different. ❤
