The Japanese Friendship Garden, also known as Sankei-en is a 12 acre Japanese garden located within Balboa Park in San Diego, California
It was built in 1915 as one of the exhibits for the Panama-California Exposition. At the time it was known as the Japanese Teahouse
The Asakwa family cared for the teahouse from 1917 until 1941
The Japanese Friendship Garden is an
expression of friendship between San
Diego and its sister city Yokohama that binds the two cultures to create a
unique experience for visitors from all
over the world. Representing a new
concept in the development of a
Japanese garden outside of Japan,
The Japanese Friendship Garden is well known for its unique setting, stone arrangement, koi pond, exhibition hall and ornamental tree collection.
