I love watching visitors to England famous for terrible food, try the classics for the first time, and get blown away by how good fish and chips can be. Curry sauce in a chippy is not usually exactly high end, but goes incredibly well with fish and chips.

Curry sauce is fine with chips, but vile with battered fish, in much the same way that Hindus mix and islamists do not.

The yorkshire coast is a good place too. Easier to find a place that uses beef dripping. Modern chippies use a vegetable oil blend that can't get to as high a temperature without burning so the batter especially absorbs more grease and it leaves a very bitter aftertaste which needs a pint of vinegar to wash away

Haha, I've walked by that random thing many times. It's by Tottenham Court Road Elizabeth Line entrance. Also, I like how you picked up on the mushy peas being the "healthy part" of the meal. It helps balance out the fried-ness of the other two for me, if that makes sense....

The curry sauce probably tasted very familiar to him as traditional British curry (similar in taste to most chip shop curry) was how the dish became introduced to Japan (brought from India as a Royal Navy sailors dish). So, while the two branches went in seperate directions they share a common (and surprisingly recent) culinary genealogy. Okay, I'll stop nerding now.

Fish and curry sauce is brilliant, love it 😁 Need to try that ice cream doughnut, it looks amazing :O Ah, Greggs, proper British food 🤣 (it's kind of a meme, Greggs aren't the only suppliers of this stuff, although they are probably the most consistent) Sushi is pretty accessible these days in the UK (although good quality is maybe a bit harder to find outside London - I can imagine they make more effort in London since most of the wealth is there, and the Japanese embassy is also there)

Glad you got a good one. You can probably trace a historical line between Uk chip sauce curry, and japanese curry . Fish in batter dipped in curry sauce is quite similar in concept japanese chicken katsu with curry. Fish and chips looks v good, but peas looked like fresh peas. thats not right. Add ketchup to your palette of sauces. Also i find Hot English brekfast tea works well with fish and chips as a palette cleanser. 😁😁

When I lived in London I found the fish and chips a bit disappointing, perhaps they have improved. However, the fish and chips in the North, Yorkshire in particular were really nice especially if you were eating them at the seaside. I always think it is a bit of shame that visitors just go to London as there are so many places outside of London which have amazing fresh locally grown produce which isn't as expensive.

All around the country most of us anyway, love chip shop curry sauce. It is definitely most like Japanese curry sauce, it's not like Indian curry, and it's slightly different to Chinese curry. Some chip shop curry sauces are more like Chinese curry sauce, but the best ones are more like Japanese curry. Stuff with potatoes is a very English, German, and Russian thing, probably because potatoes are high-carb fast-release energy food, that keeps you warm on a bitter winter's day, with either gravy, or chip shop/Japanese curry sauce. And the tea should be proper English tea, so steeped for a good amount of time so it's dark, then milk and sugar, that warms you up very well on a bitter winter's day.

Hobson's is great but their mushy peas are weird. I don't think they make them with proper Marrowfats, which means they're not starchy enough, they taste more like garden peas and they're a little 'bitty' as the skins don't break down properly. I don't know why they can't just do proper mushy peas.

It’s not very often that you see a sushi restaurant outside of Japan with an authentic Japanese-style jungle setting. 12:51 Is the wasabi fake (i.e., horseradish) as it invariably is in the US (and can you tell the difference)? Not knowing Japanese 😳, I kept on wondering about _Itadakimasu_ (as in 3:45)-it seemed a little weird to say “Let’s eat” when starting any dish, especially when the other people are already eating. It turns out it means something like “receive [humbly]” which shows both reverence for the food and gratitude for the people involved in its production. There’s a mindful appreciation about it-that’s _way_ nicer than “Let’s eat.”

@@GeorgeJapan Yeah, that's why you use flat plates and spoons and forks to eat curry also, compared to other traditional Japanese dishes which are always on small plates or bowls. Curry restaurants were built next to Japanese Navy bases for the sailors who loved the British curry and it then spread across Japan as all the locals grew to love it. Think it was around 1880's or so

The FIRST THING YOU NEED to do is drench everything in salt and vinegar ESPECIALLY the mushy peas, squeeze lemon over the fish then dig in, LUSH! REMEMBER THE VINEGAR

Sadly our fish fillets are getting thinner and thinner. The fish don't get a chance to mature as they once did.
