I was so happy when I discovered that the Japanese title of the recent game “Resident Evil: Biohazard” was “Biohazard: Resident Evil”.
@cwxc4 жыл бұрын
Well, Biohazard is the real name of the game and that's how Japan calls it since the first one in 1998 (iirc), it only got translated to Resident Evil for the exported version because "Biohazard" was not available in the US.

Even in France we sometimes translate english movie titles into... english. For example, "The Hangover" is called "Very Bad Trip" (lit.). Why!?
@kelkel63715 жыл бұрын
Probably because most people in France know what a bad trip is. Easier to understand than the word hangover I think.

And I thought German movie titles are stupid. This is a whole nother level! Little Bonus: Example for stupid, irrational, horrible choices of movie titles for German audiences: - Forgetting Sarah Marshall deutscher Titel: Nie wieder Sex mit der Ex, transl. "Never again sex with the ex-girlfriend" - Alien deutscher Titel: Alien - Das unheimliche Wesen aus einer fremden Welt, transl. "Alien - The scary creature from a foreign world" - Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story deutscher Titel: Voll auf die Nüsse, transl. "(hit hard) In the nuts" And mein personal favorite: Tomorrowland (deutscher Titel: "A World Beyond"... yeah, they just gave it a different English titel that's even more complicated like WHAT THE FUCK?!?!)

That was a fun watch. But not uncommon in other languages. German movies used to have really bad titles. And some of them still do. The funniest ones to me are the ones that add subtitles (as in alternate titles) or also change it to a different English title, though usually less nonsensical. An example of the first one would be Ridley Scott's "Alien", which was turned into "Alien - The Sinister Creature From A Different World". An example for the second one would be "Taken" with Liam Neeson, which was also changed to "96 Hours" (in English). The sequel was "96 Hours - Taken 2". Huh? This isn't just a German thing in Europe, either. Alien once again turned into "Stranger - The Eighth Passenger on the Nostromo" in Polish. Or "Electronic Murderer" for a James Cameron classic with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also, I think All You Need is Kill was originally a light novel. At least that's what I read about 15 years ago. Though, to be fair, it feels like light novels are specifically written to be turned into manga/anime. The protagonist was a 17 year old Japanese boy, not Tom Cruise. Hell, it had a nerdy, swirly-glasses-wearing female mechanic. If that's not anime bait, I don't know what is.

Hey! I know that this video is old, but I just wanted to let you know that the the rising sun flag (旭日旗) you used in your thumbnail is basically just as offensive as the Nazi flag to a lot of other countries that were taken over by Japan at the time so it might be a good idea to take note of that for your future content. But other than that, excellent content!
@kojitakeda7945 жыл бұрын
Dogen is smart enough to know what the rising sun flag is. Only Koreans are making fuss over nothing. They say it's offensive just because it was used by Japanese imperial army. Our national flag was used by Japanese imperial army and Navy too. Are you planning to complain about our national flag next?
@dsch7725 жыл бұрын
@@石川俊也-e2u The fact that this flag has been used long before WWII doesn't justify the use of it in current days. The swastika, which I'm sure you're very familiar with, has been used for thousands of years, long before Germany even existed. Yet it doesn't stop it from becoming a taboo in modern day Europe. It's not the Europeans' fault, not is it the swastika to blamet. It's the very people who committed these war crimes that are at fault. It is a real shame what swastika has become, but it is what it is. The same argument goes for the rising sun flag. Another point I want to bring is that Germany has changed hands since WWII. The current day Germany is no longer the German Reich, but the current day Japan is still that Japan. It does make the continued use of the rising sun flag slightly controversial, and I totally respect those who are against it.
@石川俊也-e2u5 жыл бұрын
@@dsch772 I'll entertain your point as I have time to spare. Yes, the swastika "existed before" but only in theory. It was not styled in the same way that it was when used by the Nazi's. The Buddhist, Chinese, Indian swastika's are different from the one used by the Nazi's. Therefore you cannot say the same swastika that was used by the Nazi's was used for anything other than the purpose of promoting Nazism or existed for longer than the Nazi's reign. There's a reason the symbol is still used in Buddhism, China and India- Because they're separate and therefore the point is invalid. The Rising Sun flag differs from this though. The same Rising Sun that is used by Japan is the one that has been used throughout all of Japanese history. Therefore there is a very clear difference between a symbol that was edited to be only made for the Nazi party and one that has been used for hundreds of year prior without any issue. I would also ask you this, do you campaign or support the banning of the Great British Union Jack? This flag is still used widely by the British and yet was also used by them during the reign of their Empire in which they committed many crimes. Surely you wouldn't suggest the Union Jack is offensive or anything more than a sign of British identity. I would also suggest looking through Korean history of the past 20 or so years. Did you know Korean news stations covered the fact that Japanese Naval Ships would dock in South Korea for joint military exercises? Perhaps not. More interesting is the fact that they had no issue with the rising sun flag that was flown from these ships. The rising sun flag only became an "issue" in Korea after 2002. A Korean footballer came under fire for making racially mocking celebrations in a match against Japan, as a scapegoat he mentioned seeing fans with the Rising Sun flag and said it reminded him of Imperialism. Soon after this, Koreans started finding the flag as "offensive". You see, the issue with this flag was only made as a scapegoat for South Korea's own racism as proven by the fact they didn't find it offensive before and only followed what they heard from the media after an interview with that footballer.
