French howitzers clearly did not pose an effective threat to Japan destroyers. However, I remember that the French army had deployed 14-inch coastal artillerys on key islands in the South China Sea. In addition, the Japanese army in 1939 was not equipped with Shiki 99 light machine guns.

Technical the French colonial troops had already left. In reality, the partisan groups that already fought against French colonialism then fought Japan colonialism.

Is this one of the alternate history battle? Itu Aba or Taiping Island was never occupied by the Japanese, at least properly, since they bypass it to attack the Philippines at once.
