"じゃありませんでした" (ja arimasen deshita) is a Japanese phrase that is used to express the negative past tense. It is equivalent to saying "was not" or "did not" in English. Here are some examples of when you might use this phrase: When apologizing for something you did not do: ごめんなさい、私はあなたの財布を盗んだんじゃありませんでした。(Gomen nasai, watashi wa anata no saifu wo nusandanjya arimasen deshita.) "I'm sorry, I did not steal your wallet." When denying something in the past: 私は昨日、あのレストランに行ったんじゃありませんでした。(Watashi wa kinou, ano resutoran ni ittanjya arimasen deshita.) "I did not go to that restaurant yesterday." When correcting a mistake you made in the past: あの時の答えは間違いじゃありませんでした。(Ano toki no kotae wa machigai ja arimasen deshita.) "The answer at that time was not incorrect." Since you are still in the basic learning phase, I understand the words and grammatical patterns I've used are not meaningful to you but I hope these examples help you understand how to use "じゃありませんでした" in Japanese.
