Hello, i have this kind of bonsai, and i need to know if i can take care of it indoor. Thank you kindly!
@bonsaiempire3 жыл бұрын
No, the maple can not be kept indoors.

After two months the maple is okay. Even if it was very hot outside and inside the apartment, I gave it alot of water and he's still alive 😁

Pruning when shoots extend to 5 leaves? Aren't JM opposite leaved? So it'd be 4 or 6? You don't advocate pinching?

I know maple trees like acidic water but at the place we live, the tap water is hard with calcium. What should I do to make the water suitable for my potted maple tree?

I personally use biogold a lot, and like it. Theres cheaper alternatives available though, it doesnt matter all that much.

I understand that propagating JM from cuttings is very difficult. I've tried it myself with 100% failure. Has anyone succeeded?
@bonsaiempire4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter! It's not too hard but the seasonal timing is crucial - the Japanese maple can easily be propagated by planting seeds, cuttings, or air layering in the summer. Some more info can be found here: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/maple
@peterboneg4 жыл бұрын
@@bonsaiempire Thanks, although that page didn't give any more details on the timing or techniques used. I have successfully rooted cuttings of other species. I've heard other people say that JM are very difficult to root from cuttings. Peter Chan has a video about it and seems to have some success though. I wonder if the success rate varies with cultivar? Have you succeeded yourself and with which cultivars?
@pansepot14904 жыл бұрын
@@peterboneg bonsai empire has a video where William Valavanis describes various maples cultivars. He talks about propagation as well, apparently there’s differences between cultivars. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4bKYoejlLycY68 For the right timing I am sure an in depth google search will give results. Plenty of bonsai forums where the topic has been covered. Good luck! 👍

Good question. I have grown them from cuttings - but I believe most Maples are actually air-layered. This would be done in late summer to autumn (or otherwise early spring, but I have never tried this time of year myself) and also aids in creating a balanced Nebari.

I've had success with semihardwood cuttings (current year's growth that has begun to turn woody) taken in summer.

Great video and advice. I have recently started growing JM's from cuttings. I might try from seed also in the future. I made a short video on my YT channel showing my first Acer Palmatum cuttings I took in late March. I have 12 which made it through summer. I have a few other varieties now taken a few days ago also which I showed at the end. Happy Growing :)

I live in Calgary where the outdoor temperature is hot and dry during summer and extreme cold during winter. Should I still place my potted maple tree outdoors?

Well it will need some winter protection for sure; www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/bonsai-care/overwintering

I have been growing Acer Palmatum from seed since December and they are doing well. Would you still recommend growing young seedlings outdoors? Even during the winter months? :)
@bonsaiempire4 жыл бұрын
Yes, outdoor - but protected from extreme temperatures for sure. An unheated greenhouse in colder areas for example would be ideal.

It only showed watering the leaves. Beginners will just water the canopy, rather than the soil. Also, watering the foliage can cause a lot of fungal problems.
@bonsaiempire4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben! Around 1:35 the tree is watered quite thoroughly - that is how we do it. Some of the water definitely spills around the tree, but more than enough hits the soil. We actually usually water a second time a minute or so later. Either way, you need to make sure the soil gets more than enough water indeed - you make a good point.
