It really is a big tree, and thats a dwarf variety so the tree must be quite old.

Beautiful Maple. What i like about is that it actually looks like a tree, you will see in nature and has been there for a 100 years.

I agree! That's what I liked about it so much when i discovered it in the nursery.

By using the guy wire on the first branch in the video, does in not look 'to straight' then? I'm just wondering if you want to pull the branch down even further in the future :D? Great tree btw!
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Great question Davey! I bring the branches down to keep the thick branches, but over time I will replace the straight branches with new branches which I will wire into place. A combination of both will create a very beautiful natural looking tree.

I got this from a landscaping nursery.

Do you recommend defoliation each year or less frequently than that to maintain the trees strength? Lots of teaching states that repeatedly defoliating deciduous trees will eventually weaken them which could cause other issues like winter death in there a weakened state?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Great question Kyle. I defoliate my deciduous trees during the dormant period, meaning they are taking a nap anyways so for the tree it feels like winter. I do it every year and work on them at that time, wire prune. I believe that they come back stronger every time, and doing it year over year will improve the overall health and strength.

Why do you place wood under one side to angle the tree when working on it?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, because when I am going to repot the tree in Spring thats the new angle I will pot it in. It makes it easier to style the tree. :)

Will it be possible to improve that one big root with such an old tree? If so, how long will it take?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Ohh absolutely! The one big odd root in the back, right? I will take this one off in the Spring. It is kinda hard to say how long it will take as this maple is very slow growing and I dont know if there is anything good hiding in the old soil. Well see in the Spring :)

Hey Jerome! What kind of timber do you use for your custom box? Assuming its treated but Ive always felt cautious of all those prohibitve chemicals
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Hey Oliver 👋🏻 it is untreated wood I picked up at the Home Depot. Just regular 2x4. It lasts about 3 years which I just the right amount.

How quickly do maples recover from corrections and pruning? There's a little pre-bonsai maple at a local nursery that I'd love to pick up, but the poor thing is riddled with root rot, and I'm worried to too drastic of a root pruning this late in the season will cause it to die in the fall and winter. Any thoughts?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the specie entirely, some heal and recover super fast, and others super slow. Since you know it is riddled with rot, I would stay away from it.
@adamheyrend99872 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! :) I'll have to keep my eye out for other good candidates.
@Andrea-cy6nf2 жыл бұрын
its fine to defoliate tree in this time of year? i think it is better leave on and let the tree reuse energy from leaves and store in trunk for winter..but maybe i'm wrong
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Like I explained in the video, June/ July is the best time to do that when deciduous trees go into a dormant period. Since they will be dormant, this is perfectly safe and will help the tree recover faster and become stronger as well.
@pansepot14902 жыл бұрын
@Andrea note that the video has probably been recorded a while ago. NOW is September, not middle of summer June July. With the cooling of temperatures and late August rains, the deciduous trees in my garden are in the middle of their autumn spurt of growth, far from dormant.

Nice work. You’ve given me a few helpful ideas to try on my Japanese Maple - Sharp’s Pygmy. Thank you. 😊 Unsolicited Advice Warning (toss if not helpful) the music is too upbeat. I think many of us see working on bonsai as a quiet, reflective and a time to practice to be in the moment. Upbeat music is the opposite of all that.
