Japanese maple fusion bonsai project - Arkefthos Bonsai

One advantage of having thousands of seedlings, is that you can create several projects like that, play with new ideas and techniques. This time there is a fusion project with Acer palmatum "Sango Kaku" seedlings. The taller ones are used for the final structure, while some smaller ones are used to fill in the gaps. Actually, even though there is going to be fusing in many places, if I ended up with gaps after 6 or 7 years, I will be glad. I don;t aim fir a perfectly fused tree, but rather an old, ragged, injured look, with cavities and wounds. This is not going to be a perfect japanese maple. I will make others with this goal in mind. So.... not so much a fusion!

Indeed this was a lot of work! Don't need a time machine Gloria. In 3-4 years this will be.mostly fused since I am growing it into the ground. It will go into a better location though and it will grow fast! Cheers!

Unfortunately this might take sometime. I uploaded a video in early spring about nemawashi. The process of digging a tree from the ground to cut the thick long roots and putting it back in. In this video, I document the process for a Japanese white pine and for 2 maple fusion projects I'm doing. This was one of them. So this is in the ground now, growing strong. I will included in an update video I will do in December, though. Cheers!

The ground for sure. Ones a ficus super easy to fuse. The other is a China berry a little slower. Fun to experiment

Cool idea and really good work! Am curious how that looks in 10 to 15 years! I have started last year many Clumpstyle projects and will try this year times something similar only without the cavity in the middle! Greetings from the "Ruhrpott" Germany

Thank you! Did your clumpstyle trees fuse already? Most of them should have. Fusing is a very rewarding project if you have the sare seedlings. I did two this year and hundreds of Kabudachi. PS. I will probably be in your "neighborhood in late March! Cheers!

Merci! En fait, pour cela, je ne supprimerai pas le maillage. Il restera pour toujours à l'intérieur de l'arbre pendant que je travaille à l'extérieur. Il a l'air parfait maintenant, je mettrai à jour!

Awesome!! When will you remove the wire from inside and how do you plan on doing that?

Great question! No the wire mould is never going to come off. It will be slowly intergrated to the tree. Maybe cut parts of it off to help with the fusion. What will be coming off in steps, are the cable ties. I will give it 3 months of root growth to start establishing in it's position in the ground and I will remove all the base ties, by late May early June. Then check every now and then the growth of the seedlings and remove the ties that bite considerably into the bark. Thank you!

Καλησπέρα! Many of the ties have been removed but I'm not very happy with the placement of the tree, so this spring I will be moving the fuse projects into a new bed with more organic soil and a bit more water. I will make a video documenting the evolution. Looking good still!

How long till you take ties off?

You have to watch the trees and remove ss needed, as they bite in. One year later and I have removed all of the lower ones, about one 3rd remain higher up. I didn't have much thickening and growth though as this wasn't the best position in the garden to grow jm. Next video I'm uploading is this tree, another fusion tree and a white pine moving into better positions. Cheers!

This tree is planted in the ground. The roots not being restricted in a pot and free to grow in a moisture retaining but very fast draining soil, with summer irrigation and heavy nitrogen fertilizing, this tree will grow rapidly this growing season. I believe in autumn I will have a significant update on this project. Thank you for your comment!
