Absolutely, even the ones that grow large you can control the growth to suit the size you like. if you wanted to just grow dwarf varieties which grow to between 3 and 6 foot generally , there is a great choice . The important thing is the soil , which in general should be slightly acid and well drained so as its kept moist but not sitting in water. And if they are not in the direct sunlight all day that helps , also not open to a strong or persistent wind .I am glad you found the videos useful if you need any more advice just ask . I am no expert but I know what works and what has not over the past 15 years or so . Kind Regards Terry Morgan

It appears as though you have a top dressing of mulch, what is your soil like? And do you amend it to provide more drainage and aeration?

@@andrewbaumann8430 Hi Andrew, I have very poor clay and chalky soil. So I covered the garden with a weed control sheet membrane ,then cut holes in the membrane where I wanted the three to be planted. All the plants are in containers with a good ericaceous /grit and sharp sand mix for drainage. Then i dug the containers into the ground , The membrane sheet is then covered with bark clippings. That is what you are seeing as mulch but its really to hide the black weed control membrane. I can then control each plants soil conditions and they look natural. I hope this helps , Thanks for watching , All the best Terry.M

Fantastic overview of maple care and growing - you are now my one stop source for maple advice (those sunken pots are inspired). Thanks, Terence.

Spectacular trees indeed, feast for the eyes. 🙏. Your videos have been very helpful. I’m keeping all my Japanese maples in pots at least for the next five years. My local garden center has large and very old trees in pots and cost between £300/- to £1000/- for the oldest one. Must be at least 20 yrs plus.

Did you prune that Katsura in front of window? Cause the bark is very thick (for maple) in comparison to how big the tree is, if this is natural i might give this a try, i love that.

Your garden is just amazing! So beautiful! What are those fruits with red/orange color that are on the ground around your Osakazuki at 5:00 to 5:20?

Good Morning ( here in England) Meggy, Thank you for your nice comments. Those pods are from the flowering Cornus Kousa or commonly known as Dogwood tree which is behind the Osakazuki. There are a few Chinese and Japanese varieties which flower , these flowers are called Bracts and it is these that turn into those red raspberry looking pods. Thanks for watching Kind Regards T.M.Morgan

Brilliant videos! Just discovered your channel after trying to find good comparison videos on Japanese Maples. I have a small patio garden with a narrow soil perimeter (~50cm wide) which stretches around the patio. Do you think any of these maples which you've shown across all of your videos would suit such a space?

It looked like the variegated spcs. were struggling. I thought of hydrangeas and p.h. level of the soil. My mom lived in a clearing of ash and black walnut trees. An old very wet 12 acre stand between corn fields for 150 years. I cleared yard and garden for her. We used hardwood mulch. Her variegated stuff was the most vivid I've seen no matter the type of plant. Maybe it's a nitrogen thing...

You need a bigger Mikawa Katsubusa. They are really beautiful when they get to be about 7+ years old.

Hi Terence, As a fellow longstanding Japanese maple fan, I have often considered keeping my maples in pots and submerging the pots in the boarders. Apart from soil mix, the other most discussed subject is watering, which with pots is fairly straight forward except yours are buried in the soil. Could I ask you how and when you decide that your maples need watering please. Nice site and kind regards.

Hi Gary, yes it seems to be a bit of a topic for debate. I have plastic containers which i have drilled quite a lot of extra drainage holes 20mmDia . Not only in the bottom but also in the sides. Then I've used 20mm washed builders gravel on the bottom of the dug hole and a further 50mm (2inches) of 20mm gravel in the pot ,before placing it in the dug hole. The mix i use has at least 20% washed 10mm gravel or grit in it for drainage. As regards watering the same rules apply , if it feels dry on top water it. I m not saying its the right thing to do , its just what i have done and i just adapt methods to suit. If i find any of the plants struggling i move them or repot , which i tend to do every 3 years or so. Thanks for showing an interest ,it keeps me on my toes and review the results year on year. I hope this helps. Lets hope that next year is better Have a good one. Kind Regards T.M.Morgan.
