It really depends on the setting of the anime and how exaggerated the characters are. If you know how to spot the inflections and speech habits then you’ll have a pretty good time learning Japanese.

One that aired last season called Shoushimin Series seemed pretty naturally as well. I’m not really sure how natural it actually is since I’m still not comfortable with the language, but the way they spoke gave me that vibe and actually helped me remember some vocabulary

It just depends how overly dramatic the anime is, which you can usually tell even if you dont speak japanese Using English shows as an example, the English used in your average romance show is gonna be alot more normal then the english used in lord of the rings

is "a sign of affection" a good show to use as learning material since it is a show about college aged people seemingly made for teens and up ? or will the japanese in that show be hard to learn because of the aforementioned target audience/setting?

I'd say yes actually. You can get reading practice too, since the main female lead is hearing impaired and she uses texting a lot. And most of the Japanese used is quite simple.

I remember Odd Taxi having a, in my admittedly uninformed opinion, great presentation of casual and natural sounding modern japanese. It's hard to describe, but the tone and vibe felt natural in general

I lately discovered the gem called Junkers, Come Here! and since it's a slice of life the language isn't stylised, it's pretty natural. I think slice of life anime are safe to watch.

Did Junkers get recommended to you too? KZbin recced it to me and I teared up at the end. The whole movie was also written and animated in a very natural way, only Fumie was over the top as the comic relief lovesick maid.

@@pinokosthewife yes, YT recommended it to me. I teared up as well, especially after remembering my beloved dog who died year ago. I also found out a bit about it and if you liked the song then you should look up Naoto Kine - he is the author of the book and he sings the song in the movie. Do I regret being fed this via algorithm? Definitely no.

Yuta, I wonder: in many more recent slice-of-life anime I hear a lot of (I guess) Gen Z lingo I'd never heard before like "yoro" ("yoroshiku") or "Kami!". Think 'My Dress-Up Darling', for instance. Is that how teenagers really talk nowadays? It's been years since I had a real interaction in Japanese, lol.

As a massive anime consumer, I think anyone who tells you that Japan isn't at least somewhat culturally represted in it's media is a total goofball. The differences in speech from one character to another even within the same anime are a huge part of the characterization and humor in a show! You don't have to know Japanese to hear it either. I'm a little embarrassed to know so many weebs think real people talk like ecchi cat girls or Dio.

@@Zschepard sure, he's Japanese, but he tends to exaggerate everything to please his Western audience. Not only him, but most Japanese content creators these days are creating content for the sake of views, and often the content is sensationalistic or misleading. And often his videos even blow up on Japanese social media. There was a lot of good stuff on KZbin in the 2010s.
