The Office was one of the top TV comedies in America for about 8 years. This parody does a really good job of taking the format and characters of The Office, removing the American stereotypes, and replacing with Japanese stereotypes instead.

Fun fact: Stapler is "hocchikisu" in Japanese because it's named after the EH Hotchkiss Company, the first company who exported staplers to Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. So, "Hotchkiss" because synonymous with staplers in Japan just like "Xerox" is synonymous with copiers in the USA.
@josebatt33594 жыл бұрын
“Hotchkiss” came from the first stapler imported from America, the “Hotchkiss No.1” by the E.H.Hotchkiss Co, became a generic term for stapler in Japanese.

@@lifeasmiyuki The first few episodes of season 1 of the US Office was almost a script copy with different characters and location. I think that was a condition of them using Gervais's script, so the humour didn't quite translate from the original British to American. That was a general feeling among fans when it came out first. After that period, though, the American scriptwriters managed to flesh out their own stories and the actors started to get comfortable with their roles and it started getting good. As someone just learning Japanese, I might have to start looking for Japanese dramas and light comedies/sitcoms, as opposed to the boisterous game-show and reaction reality comedies that we tend to see online.

I like both versions of The Office even though they're quite different from each other. The Office US feels like a Disney version of The Office UK, if you know what I mean. The Office (US Version) was the most popular sitcom in the US in the mid to late 2000s. I personally find the British original version to be a lot funnier, but mostly because they don't have to censor everything and make it family friendly like shows have to do in the US. Like this joke from the original The Office could have never been on the US The Office lol kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnrRaWecj8Serqs The US version is still a pretty funny show until the last 3 seasons or so though. If you have Netflix and it isn't on the JP Netflix you could always use a VPN to get the US Netflix where the US version is available. Sadly the UK version isn't on it any more though.

It sort of depends on your sense of humour. British and American comedies typically have very different approaches 🙂 The British version of 'The Office' gets its laughs from the awkward and cringey nature of a 'real life office' setting. Most of the characters just try to get through the day, but always end up as the fool 😂 The American version of 'The Office' however focuses on optimistic, larger than life characters that get into crazy antics. It's much more light-hearted and not nearly as cringe-inducing, which makes it easier to watch.

I hope you understand this is all satire and just meant for laughs. It’s merely for laughs, and we like you guys. This is definitely how Americans (and English-speakers in general) view Japan. Poking fun at someone is how we show that we like and respect you. And this starts off with the British making fun of us, which is a long-standing tradition. They love to make fun of America. Lol. I’m not sure if it’s the same in Asian culture, but in the English speaking-world, being made fun of is the highest form of flattery. If people make fun of you, it means they like you. So, this is meant to be deferential to Japan and Japanese culture. Also, it’s important to understand that the American audience watching this has no knowledge of Japanese. So, it’s like watching a TV show in a language you can’t understand at all and just relying on the acting and the pictures. Lol. Japanese is really divergent from English, so it’s impossible for us to understand any of it without taking a lot of classes.
