these tanks are actually very vulnerable without close in support from troops, primarily because visibility is so limited. modern tanks still have this issue even though today's camera systems make it a far smaller problem.

***** the Japanese tanks worked well enough for then in China/Manchuria where having a fast infantry suppression tank was more viable. Different designs for different tasks. Plus the US and Europe had Industrial capacities that outmatched Japan in both quantity and quality so it's no wonder the Japanese tank wouldn't be "up to par"

The japanese in ww2 were the walking definition of worst army ever. Everything they produced was inferior and according to casualties, they most likely couldn't hit a stationary elephant if they wanted to. no battles won, no mass damage inflicted. The only thing worse i could think of were the people dominated by them. Actually,i take what i said eralier, THEY were the walking definition of worst army ever

22DEC1941, The Philipine Islands. America went TANK to TANK with this very Tank...and we lost. And we were defeated having the BETTER TANK. I'll get to that later. Lets see how TEAM AMERICA stacks up. America's Stewart M3A1 was a relatively new design, manufactured 1941-1944. It had a crew of 4 (CDR, Gunner, Driver, Mg Gunner), it was approximately 18 tonnes. POSITIVES Terrific Armour for a Light Tank and a Great Gun. America's Light Tank was equal in firepower to Rommel's Pzkpfw III G medium tank. The M3 had 38mm upper hull armour/44mm front bottom hull armour 51mm gun mantlet and 25mm side/rear armour. Our 37mm M5 L/56.6 shot out at 884 m/s and could penetrate 53mm @ 500m or 40mm @ 1Km. OUR speed was also good 36mph road/20mph off road. [NEGATIVES?] 75miles to the tank full---I mean GOD AWFUL. The British failed using them in Operation Crusader and the Russians refused to accept any more of them. Their tiny tracks (10" wide) mean they would get stuck in a puddle of water. Worse, it only took PREMIUM Gasoline which was in very short supply, if at all (97 Octaine). The Type 95 Ha-Go was built in 1934-1945 and was armed with a 37mm Type 98 L/46 gun (645 m/s) POSITIVES: The Japanese slapped a Diesel in there and it got 400 miles to the tankful for a 7 ton tank---that's better gas milage than my 1999 Madza Miata!!! And it could travel over rough terrain [NEGATIVES:] Razor Thin Armour (6mm-20mm) and a poor gun Yes, it had a 37mm gun (all the rage since the Germans introduced their magnificant 37mm KwK 36 L/45 (762m/s) but it only put out 645m/s meaning the Japanese 37mm could only penetrate @ 25mm@500m. What did this mean? The US M3 could knock out a Type 95 at any angle from 1Km on down. The Type 95 could ONLY take out a M3 Stewart out at 500m or less and only with a lucky shot to the side or rear. Could have been worse---the French in 1940 went up against German tanks with the mighty 37mm SA 18 Puteaux L/21 (300 m/s) that could penetrate 12mm @ 500m. The French armed their Renault R-35 & Hotchkiss H35 with 1918 era SA18s that were stripped from Renault FT17 WWI tanks in storage!!! Back to the Battle: How did we lose? GASOLINE. Two Companies (approx 37 tanks) US M3 Tanks (National Guard) motor marched to where the Japanese were and were clean out of Gasoline {75 miles a tankful---thats like driving a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 CrewSide!!! Draining all the tanks of their GAS, The Commander cobbled up a platoon of 5 Stewart M3s. Sticking to the roads, we got ambushed and the Japanese were able to work around our sides and hit us many times before we could respond. We left our flaming wrecks and retreated back to Batan. And the fate of those drained M3s? Destroyed by our own hands!!!

The japanese had the potential to build more advanced, destructive war vehicles. If they had only realized the huge supply of oil and tungsten they were sitting on in Manchukuo and Korea. Their experimental Ge class artillery proved to be able to pierce Sherman armor, however they could never take it to production before the war ended.

They were still a very agrarian society and they didn't have the manifacturing capacity required for mass tank production. Steel was not enough to go by and they wanted to use most of it for building up the navy. Japanese were always the underdog against USA forces so it was interesting to see how they had to learn from being very offensive to very defensive (from banzai charges into defensive cave systems)

Good info on a enemy tank and if you are a grunt you want to know the weak points and putting the info out that you can disable the turret by putting a canteen or bayonet under the lip of the turret is useful knowledge because during close quarters combat anything is helpful to neutralize a enemies capability which is paramount to survival, especially if the GI had no friendly tank around to knock out this tank and a 37mm or a machine gun could do great damage to buddies in the field. Any info is important in combat.

The panzer 4 is easier to maintain, but they were using Tigers to plug gaps in their lines. A panzer 4 doesn't have the same shock value or overwhelming firepower. Germany was undone more by the fact that their industry could never handle a long war. No matter what type of tanks they build, it'd still never be enough. And the Panzer 4 was needlessly complicated--lots of roadwheels and sharp angled welds, a complex engine, etc. pz5 was a much better vehicle, but its drive system had issues.
@redreaper-xe6so13 жыл бұрын
@SpenzOT look at the thickness of the armor. it is 12mm over the front and sides. You can penetrate it with .30-06 fire or any sort of antitank weapon (.50BMG would easily slice through it)

@T33K3SS3LCH3N9 жыл бұрын
Either by taking over a storage depot, or by taking a bogged down tank and repairing it, or by forcing one to surrender. It often happened that tanks were cut off their supply routes and ended up without fuel or broken down by mechanical issues. Usually the crew blows up their own tank then so it doesn't fall to the enemy, but sometimes that doesn't happen for one reason or another.
Running out of fuel or mechanical breakdown. Happened quite frequently. During the first gulf war the US forces had to abandon several M1s due to this.

The armor of these Japanese tanks were so thin that a 75 mm armor piercing round could pass right through one of them. In the only tank battle of the New Guinea Campaign on Biak Island, two M4 Shermans in the 603rd Tank Battalion came head on with four Type 95's. The Shermans first fired AP, but they went right through Jap tanks, exploding in the ground behind. The Shermans then resorted to HE rounds, which did the job, blowing the turrets off the Type 95's.

When the tank then goes to fire, the rocket hits the rock and blows up before leaving the barrel. See the 3rd Indiana Jones movie (The Temple of Doom) for an example of this. - Trilby McTip, Redditor

Well they were extremely cheap. It was to replace type 89 I-go (1929 tank) due to being slow. Ha-Go whilst un impressive was deadly vs Chinese and it was very cheap machine. In 1937 it was still good enough to knock out BT-5 and BT-7's Japanese 40's tanks were left in Japan for home island defence. All the army was given was the 2000 obsolete Ha-Go's and 1000 47mm Chi-Ha's. The Shinhoto chi-Ha had 33mm frontal armour and it's gun could pen Sherman front from 500m away. Chi-Ha is 1936 design and had nearly the double amount of armour protection as the most armoured Russian tank at that time. There's a difference between being aged and being shit.
@SuperDefender48 жыл бұрын
+Jan Florovic Another flaw in here. First of all the part of being cheap? That doesn't really count since ALL light tanks are known to be cheap. The other nations could do it as well. The BT-5 and BT-7 tanks are also have 0 issues on attacking the Ha Go. Yet again you wrote the wrong information about penetrating the Sherman. In order to penetrate the Sherman with Chi Ha the crew members had to go in close combat in order to take a damage. That's like trying to penetrate an angled Tiger tank with a 76mm gun. Also being sht? There's a lot. The Chi Ha had a bad radio that had bad range. Also the tank didn't have a motor to control anything inside. Everything like the gun and the turret were hand cranked. So in the end the Japanese had problems of being both sht and outdated.

You're right, it's not junk. Junk is salvageable. And if it's a jungle tank, why was it so hard pressed to destroy a "Siberian Wasteland" tank like the T-28? The M5 Stuart was superior in armor and mobility, and had a similar gun, and is only a turret's height taller. When you compare the Type 95 to its contemporaries, it's still rubbish. You'd be hard pressed to find a tank that wasn't the Panzer I that couldn't give ANY Japanese tank thrice its weight in trouble.

What a rickety looking piece of tin. If this is what the Germans fought with the war would have been over before it had a good chance to start.
@wymynrules85659 жыл бұрын
what you have to know is, that both nations fought on different theaters of war. the in Europe it was mostly flat or hilly land, which would be easy for a big tank to move in. The Japanese had to fight on islands that where covered with jungles. And the Japanese didn't have any experience with armored vehicles like the Germans did in WWI. They also didn't that much of their resources into tanks like they did with battle ships.
@KeluMocy9 жыл бұрын
The Germans fought in comparable tanks. Panzer I&II and the Czech-made Panzer 35&38. Keep in mind, those light tanks were not designed to fight other tanks, but rather as infantry support. Also, the Pacific and SEA theaters were not really tank-friendly. But yeah, since 1939 the development of the tank in the West went into overdrive and Japan couldn't keep up.
@jaxativejax6629 жыл бұрын
It\s Japanese not German. The Japanese had acute material shortages during WW2 especially steel and didn't place a high priority on tanks as they weren't very useful during amphibious campaigns.
@AUG3519 жыл бұрын
Actually, while fighting against the Chinese in an urban environment and against the British early in the war, Japanese tanks were quite effective in an infantry support role against an enemy who had few anti-armor capabilities. The Type 95 or Type 97 were never designed with the thought of battling something like a Sherman in mind. Late in the war the Japanese developed a few medium tanks designed to counter the Sherman, such as the Type 3 Chi-Nu or Type 4 Chi-To, armed with 75 mm guns and thicker armor. Although by the time they reached the production phase it was already too late. None of them ever saw combat, sitting in the home islands waiting for the final invasion that never came.

Then you see this nice JS III coming at ya!!! That's RIGHT, SLICK!!! Your 37mm gun up against a 122mm gun and your mighty 12mm armour against the soviet's 200mm!!! It happened, it was called battle of Manchuria 1945 and yes, it was a tad one sided!!!

It was good enuf for 1930s China ops and against 2nd hand colonial equipment in 1941, but after that it was time to trade it in for a newer model… which never arrived because Japan was bankrupt by 1942.

The average height of a Japanese male is 5'5. I wouldn't say its racist its just a fact.

LOS TANQUES JAPONESES SOLO SE COMPARABAN CON LOS ITALIANOS, POR SU MALA CALIDAD, ERA UN TANQUE DEBIL, PERSONALMENTE CREO QUE SU FUERTE ERAN LOS AVIONES Y BARCOS, SUS TANQUES ERAN INEFICACES CUANDO SE ENFRENTABAN A TANQUES AMERICANOS O INGLESES.

It was considered one of the best light tanks in the world....when it was first built. By WW2 is was hopelessly obsolete against any army that had even the slightest bit of anti-tank weaponry. Just look at all those weak points. Thin, flat armor and plenty of rivets. LOL on the turret weakness. I never knew it even had that despite all the tank books I have read. Amazing video.

LOL I love how they raced it against a stuart tank, and not a Sherman. Gotta love good old WW2 propaganda.
