I decided to try out using a pond basket as a training pot for some recently purchased Japanese White Pines ( Shikoku Goyo)
I have tried to unravel and set out the roots best I can which did result in getting a little bit to involved for pine roots!
But... I feel if these survive this initial interference we’ll maybe a little closer to usable material for bonsai!

Thoroughly enjoying your videos - Thanks. A comment on Pine repotting. I am like you in the respect that I always seem to take off more soil than I initially intend to. In fact, I lost a few Pines in my first 3 years of bonsai. I now add some of the old soil to the newly repotted Pine like you and I also add a quantity of mycorrhizal fungi to replace the mycellium and to aid root growth. It's now another 3 years without losing a Pine so I feel that the fungi addition may be beneficial. Do you have an opinion on the use of this fungi?

Thanks for you feed back Guy glad you get something from my efforts! Iv killed a few native pines in the past I won’t deny! However I didn’t prune the roots to much on these more of a unpick job for now. If I get away with this on all 3 I’d consider it was more than luck :D The fungi are a requirement of pine and only beneficial so it can only help by adding some. I however had none to hand and used some of there existing soil in the hope that will aid them! 3/4 weeks on now and the candles are extending no floppy ness and foliage looks health although as you’ll be aware pines die a slow death when you’ve tampered with them. Like I say these are Currently looking good and il do an update soon!

I regards to your air layers here in the uk I start deciduous stuff as soon as first leaves have hardened off. Evergreens such as cedar, juniper ect Iv dowe in spring before leaves have pushed out properly on deciduous stuff with no issue! Especially with cedars and larger layers you may require a second sometimes 3rd season with these ones I go in each spring and clean up the calluses and reapply rooting hormones and moss! Patient’s is everything and don’t let them get flooded. Hope this has helped

Interesting video! Thanks for sharing. I'm awful when it comes to pine roots as I just hate how temperamental they can be. I really hope these pull through for you mate. I think they could grow into something really cool. Would the root grafts be on JBP like most JWP or something more native, do you think?

I believe they are grafted on to JBP roots the bark looks as if it is but there are very young! The Nurseryman who kindly talked me thru grafting said you could try graft them on to a bhutan pine but I think black pine is commonly used as probably more suitable I guess with both species you’ll have the problem of the graft out growing the tree! I sure hope these survive I can be a little over enthusiastic at times but the thought of the roots being a total mess and having a nice trees out ways that risk at this early stage! Don’t give up just remember where you went wrong :D
