14:21 My japanese teacher once told a story about this exact problem. He was working in an izakaya, and asked the kitchen for 水いっぱい, but got the response: "What do you mean? One cup or 'lots of water'??" Japanese is a language of misunderstandings, he says.
@pashiki5480

I never heard it used in that context in all my years in Japan. Save the confusion and just use 水ください

@@pashiki5480 Well I may have misremembered the exact phrasing he used, but it came down to this misunderstanding.

I have listened to all 47 of ミサ先生's videos on this playlist and have learnt a lot thanks to the many examples and useful explanations Misa gives, especially with regard to what is natural spoken Japanese and what is more formal/written style Japanese. Misa is without doubt one the best teachers of Japanese anywhere and I am puzzled that Misa sometimes alludes to unpleasant remarks made about her in the comments. I have never seen any and can't imagine on what basis any could be made to such a beautiful, charming and intelligent young woman. If such come your way, ignore them.

wait this actually makes so much sense. i feel like a lot of the big grammar mistakes in japanese are either about who is doing what to whom (or who is having something done to them and by whom), or about parts of speech being mixed up, at least for me

Embarrassing to say this but I finally finished the absolute beginners playlist, after 3 years with a few false starts! Now I have to do the review of it as well as the next playlist. Now I made a habit of doing one or half a video each day (depending on the length), it's not much but at least I'm making a steady progress. Next time I go to Japan, hopefully I can have some meaningful conversation with people... (Last time was in June, somehow I managed with very broken Japanese but people were so kind to me) I'm so thankful I came across your channel. Thank you!

Hello, Misa. You seem sad. I haven't seen your videos in a while, haven't drop by here for more than a year maybe. And that is why I can see the difference. You seem much less enthusiastic and not as energetic and upbeat as before. It does not interfere with the explanation process at all. I just want to say that I wish you to be happy. Whatever difficulties you are experiencing, I wish they went away and left you. Please cherish yourself, appreciate your health and happiness, have good rests and do not let anyone poison your well-being. You are a great person! You are loved. Everything will be alright. Please excuse me if I am wrong, this seriousness may just be you growing up as I am leaping through time, like that girl in your example, and thank you for another great video. I will catch up on all of them that I've missed in a while.

I know Misa has to allot her time for her own needs and preferences. But her recent videos, even to some extent this one, are a pale imitation of her earlier, highly detailed, expertly explained grammar lessons. No one did as good a job at it as Misa. Even when I was familiar with the topic, there were always new things to learn. Perhaps there was an increasingly smaller audience for these more advanced topics. In any case, they are greatly, greatly missed.

I was talking to a family member about my visit to Japan next year.. They were concerned (after watching a video from Paulo in Tokyo) that the police would arrest me for being a foreigner.... Anyway... After talking about the importance of understanding what not to do.. I came up with a dajare! Although it IS in English, and it's not 100% correct, but I think you will like it... It's a play on the "when in Rome" thing... When in Rome go as Romans go, when in Nihon, go as Nihongo...🤣*laughs at own joke* (Nihonjin wouldn't really work) disclaimer, I may not be the first to "come up with" it, they do say that there is nothing new under the sun. Anyway, I hope you like it!
