I am going to Japan in two weeks, these videos are really helpful. I learned Japanese to a pretty fluent (can speak quickly about more or less any topic somehow and people understand what I say more or less 100% of all times, and understand speech, also if its fast and slurred mostly) to essentially prank my wife (she has no clue) during our visit. I realize that now, that I might come in more handy than I thought...

My plan was to arrive to tokyo stay for example 2 days. Then go to kyoto for 2 days and then go to osaka for 2 days to osaka. Them from osaka fly to seoul. Can you give me your advice about the the plan is that ok? First tokyo then kyoto then osaka? Also if you could spend like 6 or 7 days in japan how would you split the days ?

Remember these things and you will be fine. 1) Be quiet, whisper to your travel buddies only when in public. Being loud is a huge no no. 2) Japanese are almost British about lining up. Respect the line, 3)There is NO customization of restaurant food unless you DIY after purchase, 4) Use headphones for your phone, don't talk on your phone in public transit 5) Wear socks without holes because there are places you must take your shoes off like entering a private home, etc. There will be a step up or a change in floor color to indicate shoes off. I carry folding slippers so I don't have to use shared slippers. 6) Be soft-spoken. Direct, sustained eye contact is considered aggressive in Japan

No no no, you've got it the wrong way round. Us Brits are almost Japanese when it comes to queuing. We draw the line at lining up for 30 mins plus at mediocre ramen restaurants, custard tart shops, and ticket offices. 🤣🤣🤣

@@japanunravelled OK. 😂 Years ago a friend and I went to London, England. Our first time on the bus there we saw the line and got in it. People frowned a bit and I assumed it was because we were foreigners. Then the bus pulled up front of us and we realized we had cut in front of everyone.😳 I said, "Oh no. This is the front of the line. Oops, sorry!" as we ran to the end of the line. We heard people start laughing and someone said, "They're Yanks!" Was my face ever red. When I lived in Japan there was an orderly line for almost everything. In my country we do line up for some things but the line rarely looks military precision like in the UK or Japan.

Yeah, this is why it's important to know. I do often find myself surprised though by how things are in the smaller cities - the lining up for trains isn't quite such a thing there, it's more freestyle.

The lines are a HUGE deal in Japan. One member of our group I travelled to Japan with tried cutting in line in a grocery store to stand behind a friend because his reasoning was he was only buying a single item so it should be "no big deal". He got heavily scolded by the customer behind him and it almost turned into a physical fight.

For big suitcases - all hotels have service to ship it to your next destination - it is not expensive and you don't need to carry it or even think about it. We went on a 2 weeks trip having 2 very large ones and only part when I was pulling it was from airport and to airport....

Less is more is clearly a good motto. (even in life in general, being able to live with less is a gift) Also wanting to do too much thing in a day in not only exausting, it's also a bit stressful and that's not the point of a vacation in my opinion. Sometime having time for the unexpected is the way to go. A beautiful pond to recharge half an hour after walking all day, a nice café to make a stop by or a nice person to chat a little to without having to rush the conversation and possibly being impolite. In general, being able to slow down your life is a key element, at least for me, for being happy.

Yes, exactly! Most trips I try to leave one day completely free to allow for spontaneity, or just to spend more time in one place. Less to plan, more time to enjoy like you say.

I was there in September (for the first time) and it was very manageable. I think the most prominent item that you noted, is learn the basic language/terms. I got by on 5 or 6 phrases and encountered no issues. Everyone was more than happy to help and they obviously recognize that you’re a foreigner so they are patient. Communicating may seem daunting for first timers, but know the basics and be patient and everything will be alright.[

I spent at least 20 minutes queuing for my jr pass at Handea airport before realising that the jr office there only activated passes that started that day. My number one tip as a recent first time traveller is to treat the first day as a write off and not make too many plans. Even if your flight is landing at 7am in the morning, chances are youll have had a 13 hr flight and you will be too knackered to do anything. Especially avoid booking certain time specific events or attractions, even if you have 4 hrs, you could spend that time trying to navigate an unfamiliar rail system

Yeah, that's a good way to look at it! There are lots of potential delays or problems for the arrival day, so day 2 is often the proper day 1. I wouldn't want to try Tokyo subway as a first-timer after a long flight. Thanks for commenting!

Excactly. Thats what my family does as well. We see the first and last day of travel as "lost days". We can't do much after arriving due to being exhausted and we can't do much before leaving either, because we already packed our bags and don't plan on opening them before arriving at home (or at customs if needed).

I'm on my first trip to Japan, and currently finishing my 3rd night (in Tokyo). One piece of your advice, on particular, is golden: as a foreigner, you must, must, must learn the basics. Not just to be polite, but because most services you'll encounter (public transport, in bars and restaurants, shop assistants) will noticeably appreciate it and seemingly offer you an even better service!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll put it on my list. The north is spectacular in winter when you have snow. Outside of skiing, some ideas: Ouchijuku, Zao snow monsters, Yamadera (watch out on the steps though) Kusatsu Onsen, Noboribetsu and Hakodate. Of course there's the Sapporo Snow Festival.

One thing I can say. At least around Tokyos metro system. Google maps is good for getting your general directions but pay attention to the signs for the different lines they will tell you exactly where they are going. Most of the map systems we used were way behind the actual train schedules. So look up from your phone and read.

This. Google Maps directions tend to pad the timings a lot in case you somehow get lost, which is why if you use your eyes as you say (and maybe check Navitime or Jorudan instead) you're ever so likely to get there quicker. Thanks for commenting!

Having traveled and lived in Japan off and on since 1976, I think you're spot on with these tips. I'm going again in 2 weeks, so I've been perusing travel sites looking for places I haven't been. It drives me crazy to see most people doing the Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka route, perhaps throwing in Hakone. With the e caption of Kyoto (a personal favorite), there are so many more beautiful and interesting places to visit.

@@japanunravelled Yes thank you so much for this tip! I will go for esim next time. I used to buy a Japanese sim card for a month when visiting Japan. Last autumn, for the first time, I rented a pocket wifi to be picked up either from the airport or sent to my hotel or to be picked up at a post office of my choice. The airport was not ideal, I thought, as the plane was to land too early in the morning, I was not too sure about getting it from my hostel so I opted to get it from Ikebukuro post office and had printed the map to "find it easily", perhaps ask a few people on the way with my broken japanese, I know the area so I should be fine, I thought. Well, I ended up getting lost, still asking people but most of them gave me wrong directions and I ended up walking for a few hours with my luggage (on wheels) which I could have left in a locker at the station, but didn't because of my assumption that I would easily find the post office. Anyway, I finally found my way by asking a policeman at a koban (little police station) who was very helpful. Then, thank gods, I finally had wifi and felt a sense of autonomy with magic google map, all that to find out that the "usual" hostel I was gonna stay, does not have the little cafe downstairs where one could leave their luggage and enjoy lunch or breakfast anylonger. So, I had to find another place to chill out before checking in. Nevertheless, that 1st day was a good experience, I got to explore more of the area which I thought I knew enough, got to practice my japanese, realised also that no matter how well you organise your trip there is always gonna be some hics, surprises, unplanned stuff and these are the spices of a trip, it brings a bit of umami. Now there might be some unexpected event in a travel, way more serious than getting lost for a few hours, so yeah to me, the #1 tip : do not forget to buy travel insurance! Out of my 5 trips to Japan, I went to hospital twice, for "minor things" though, but thank gods, ambulances are free in Japan (not like here in Australia).

Plan what you want to see and research it (youtube is great, fact!). Helps with travel, timings, faux pas etc. This may convince you or put you off. Many things are magnets for tourists for a reason and that will bring all the down sides that come with that, but make your own mind up with a bit of research if you want to go. I've been to loads of places that are very busy in Japan and around the world and had zero regrets, of course a small number have been underwhelming but I experienced that myself. I have also really enjoyed things others haven't. One thing I did, and touched on in this video, is I planned transport between every part of my itinerary i.e. what mode, how long, cost, amount of walking, opening times, etc. This allowed me to decide what I could and should do, based on my own pace and wishes. I don't plan for lost or free days, but that's my preference. But I would say be prepared and willing to adjust your plans on the fly. You may miss trains, things may be closed etc. Having internet access on the go is essential - route planning, finding places to see/eat. I had to cancel a day trip the day before but was able to plan a different day and book an activity whilst in the hotel getting ready for bed. All of the video is sound advice, my personal must dos for Japan are practical (and are irrespective of your own choices about pace or what to see): 1) wear comfortable shoes (if not in summer I would suggest breathable and waterproof), you will be walking or on your feet a lot, 2) powerbanks for your phones - you will use your phones much more than you do normally (photos, videos, google maps/translate), you do not want the stress of low or no battery. Finally, whatever you do in hindsight you may well have done something different BUT just enjoy yourself and smile.

Took hand luggage only for my first trip to Japan last year - 15 days' worth of clothes left no room to buy much to take home. Heading over again at Easter will take half the amount and use the hotel washing machines as you suggest! I wouldn't dream of using a taxi tho - I never take them here in the UK (expensive!). I love getting lost in metro systems, and the Tokyo 72hr pass is incredible value.

I can't quite fathom how you managed to get 15 days' worth of clothes in hand luggage! But yes, good plan. Hint: keep hold of 100 yen coins for the washers/driers and 50 yen coins (silver, with holes) for detergent dispensers. Easter time won't be that hot yet, so you don't need to go overboard. The alternative, I've went down this route a couple of years ago - merino everything. Now, I pack maybe one change of clothes, and I could travel indefinitely, even in the sweaty, sweaty summer here. The other time to use a taxi is when you're on your way to the airport from your hotel and don't want to lug luggage to the Tokyo City Air Terminal, Keisei Ueno, or one of the places where you can catch the Shinkansen. Also, I keep seeing people on the internet who are allergic to reading guidebooks. These books will answer questions you didn't know you had.

Then, for details, I get the Rough Guide. Only after that do I start using websites.

Going to Japan on 03.28-04.11. it's my 3rd trip ever (1st time in Japan) and surely won't be easy but it was my dream since childhood which I could finally afford to accomplish after a few years of work, when i was still studying my family couldn't afford it so couldn't I. My plane arrives at Haneda around 11pm, the last train will have left before I am done going through immigration, etc. My plan was to hang around Terminal 3 all night until the trains start up again in the morning. There should be convenience stores and vending machines where i can get food and chairs to sit in and nap. Big mistake? 😁

I disagree about the suitcase. Every standard taxi fits a suitcase and takuhaibin makes transporting them further possible as well (just don't expect same day). But I will say not to overpack it as you want room to put stuff you've bought as well.

Yeah, I didn't say, "don't bring a suitcase". I said "don't bring an ENORMOUS suitcase". The difference is enormous. Although of course, if you're going to do that anyway, taxis and takkyubin are kind of mandatory unless you want to go insane.

Here’s a cringe one: I learned some Japanese prior to my trip last year, I had a vocab of around 30- 40 words. I learned “Oss(u)” is what friends say to each other and it’s like saying “what’s up!”, thinking this would be a cool way to greet people, when I was grabbing a coffee in a hip part of Tokyo I said “Oss(u)!” to the barista and he looked at me in a state of confusion like I’d either just called his mother a whore or that i had just said “fuck you”. I proceeded to quickly order and get out of there. Apparently this is not a thing.

I love your videos! I would love some advice on the best way to experience and understand ninjas and samurai with kids - without the tourist trap rubbish. This isn't something I know a lot about, but I remember touring a samurai house in Kakunodate. It wasn't tourist trappy at all. I don't know how Iga-Ueno in Mie is either, though I rather suspect it might not be up to your standards. In your shoes, I'd be finding all the relevant places on tripadvisr and checking all the one dot reviews. Much more illuminating than any other kind.

When I booked my trip to Japan, my travel agent had a courier service with a private driver waiting for me at the airport to drive me directly to my hotel in Tokyo. After a 10+ hour flight, it was a Godsend just being able to get into a waiting car instead of trying to find another train or bus. The service was pretty reasonably priced as well.

Good for you! I opted to avoid riding cars and buses because I was really looking forward toride the trains as much as possible. Used taxi a few times as well when our feet has started to kill us😅. We usually take a taxi from the nearest train station to our hotel whenever our day trip of jumping areas in tokyo has ended. I still prefer the ambience in Osaka a little bit but you’ll always have something new to do in Tokyo. Osaka is a more chill and relaxed city compared to Tokyo. Cant wait to come back!

@tagpelicious Oddly enough, my trip ended in Kyoto and I had to get to Kansai airport in Osaka to catch my connector flight home. I told my guide to book me a limousine bus service from Kyoto to the airport in Osaka. He said "Are you sure? That will take almost 2 hours by bus. The Shinkansen will get you there in 15 minutes!" I told him that a nice, leisurely 2 hours of staring out the window at the beautiful countryside sounded like the perfect way to end my trip.

Once I went to endorse my RailPass at Narita, and there was a long line up at the Green Counter in one terminal. I went over to the other terminal on the free bus, and the line-up was much shorter.

I would say at least 3 of these aren't actual mistakes, depending on how you prefer to travel. I've been travelling to Japan for a while now and I've pretty much always showered in the morning (arriving at breakfast around 9:00 - 9:30ish), and have been using the baths in the evening. Much of it is habit, however the shower and bath both serve different purposes. I always bring a rather large piece of luggage with me, but I'm very much ok with spending just a bit more and use the takkyubin service so that I won't have the lug it around all the time (only to and from the airport, the lines leading there very much accommodate large luggage)

I have a question regarding time schedules. Which days of the week do shops usually close? And for Shopping centers? Restaurants? Museums? I know in some countries restaurants for example close on Monday, but not everywhere. And I assume on the city/countryside might be different. Museums and attractions often close on Mondays or Tuesdays. Shops and restaurants - it depends on the individual places. Last order times are often displayed at restaurants (often marked L.O. 8pm for example) so you know if you're too late.

Reaching the attractions will be generally fine with buses, subway, and trains. Especially in Kyoto though, you may find there's a bit of a walk from the stop to the entrance of the attraction. Also remember that you can rack up a lot of walking just around the attractions themselves. To be sure you'll need to check the websites of individual places. Hope that helps!

However, you can't create an account unless you have a Japanese phone number. Do you know any other way of doing this? Hello Cycling - had mixed experiences with their bicycles, but then I wasn't the one creating the account! It is not that hard to use the system of Hello Cycling, I reckon from what I saw, it is similar to Lime bikes (we used them at home), but, the issue is when you register, you need to provide your phone number, and it does not work with my Australian number. Sad to say, awful. It was warm, rainy, and mostly foggy conditions. I liked the terrain but due to the weather and my knees I held back and didn't explore the mountain like I normally would. I wanted to go to Jigokudani too but the knees held me back from that. Number 1 priority when I get home (I'm currently in Manila) is the knees.

Fuji climbing season is July to September. This is not the ideal time to walk the Kumano Kodo, since it's the most humid and hottest time of year. So you might want to consider that. (weatherspark.com/y/143379/Average-Weather-in-Shing%C5%AB-Japan-Year-Round) Also, Kumano Kodo takes a long time to get to and get away from. You might want to have extra time. Let me recommend 3 things: - Try to get the extra week anyway (just because there are so many places to visit) - Stop thinking in terms of "must-visit". There are NO "must-see" places, because everyone is different. And the only person who actually gives a flying monkeys about your trip is YOU. Whenever I see "must-visit" I laugh and wonder how many minutes I will spend there before heading off somewhere else. - You clearly like nature and outdoor stuff. Do something no-one else is doing, like visiting Sado Island, or Ishigaki, or cycling around Lake Biwa.

i get so confused on where to buy the japan rail pass. There is an official site that says that you can reserve your tickets online the moment you buy it there. is that the best place to buy it or should i go for one of the other options that you can find online. They send you a paper that you need to deliver in Japan and after you got your pass you can reserve seats. But you can't reserve there when you are still at home. does anyone have experiences with that?

The reserve online thing is very new - until very recently you had to reserve once you had the pass. Personally I rarely reserve any seats more than a few days in advance. Trains selling out is only really a problem for specific ones that run only a few times a day, the sunrise express, and of course during "golden week" and the other busy times. If you want to plan out your itinerary to the minute and reserve every single train before you get to Japan, online booking is great. If you value flexibility, you don't need it so much.

If you have a voucher, you can specify the activation date when you pick it up. If you buy it direct from JR, you're locked into the date you specified when you bought it. As for your sports equipment, I have no recommendation for you other than to use your own judgement. Enjoy!

One issue unfortunately is that flights to Kansai airport are usually up to $1000 more than flights to Haneda/Narita from parts of the US. I'm considering starting my next trip around Osaka and then to eventually do a road trip around Kyushu starting in Beppu. What do you think the best time of year to visit that area is?

Yes - it seems to depend a lot on where you're coming from. Anytime apart from the summer is great for Kyushu. In the winter it's actually great as you've got some of the best onsens down there. Have a look into flying there - great prices into Fukuoka, and then you could still fly into Narita/Haneda.

Sorry for the second comment but here's a little update on the phone situation. Due to issues with my Samsung Galaxy A53, I had to replace it with a Samsung Galaxy A54 that does support E-sim. My only concern with the E-sim is when to purchase one because I'm worried it would activate too soon if I purchase it before I leave for Japan. How should I deal with that?
