It's interesting how you talked about how the French republicans and monarchists saw Japan. I see a parallel between this and how the modern right and left see Japan. Right wingers see a homogeneous nation that stays true to it's values and culture in a morally bankrupt and multi-cultural world while left-wingers see a technologically advanced country that is a leader in socially and cultural progress and from the restrictive aspects of Christian dogma.

The French are a very paradoxical people. A nation in constant flux, but a people always set in their ways.

To be honest, it was more a "picture book" with a loose plot rather then what we would think of a modern manga. But it was a spiritual ancestor!

I have been a weeby japanophile since I was a kid. For a while I found more to relate to in the cultural abstraction than my own society. And I think that is really at the heart of japonism, it's a yearning for a Utopia better than your current environment. Only with wisdom do you find that no matter the location these hardships are still present. There was a time where I was learning Japanese and wanted to make a long visit (3-6 months), but after learning all I could about the country I found that there isn't all that much to differentiate it from anywhere else, same general populace not understanding the niche and being entertained by stupid shit, same prejudices, same everything. The art is the most unique part of Japan, and that's just because as a whole they are workaholics (sometimes working themselves to death).

Japan was never an isolated country. They chose to isolate themselves from the countries, who did not respected their world. Christian Mercenaries just followed the usual Crusades practice and once became organized they rebelled against Japanese culture by burning Shinto Shrines. In detail Japan is a distant, world's apart different planet from the rest of human species universe. In order to study Japan one must realize this is about the only non-human centered culture and we all owe to preserve as an alive World human Heritage. On the opposite side, West roots to Germanic world. Charlemagne established His Empire known as Holy Roman Empire of Germany, or 1st Reich on the grounds of Narcissism. Germanic culture is the epitome of Narcissism. Reich is a German word which means Realm. Each Reich is a step closer towards the final fulfillment, which is the establishment of Charlemagne's global Empire. Charlemagne's prize laureates are honored for their exceptional service to fulfill Reich targets. Charlemagne promised to Pope of Rome of conquering Humanity under His Roof. Narcissists need a moral reason as coverage to hide their toxic yet real intentions. Christianity played that moral part. According to the OLD TESTAMENT Adam and Eva betrayed God and then God created world. Anything but non-human is lifeless and the purpose of life is human redemption. Nothing matters but Christian souls. Christianity preaches, Jesus Christ came to world in order to save Humans from the ancient world. Anything non Christian is Evil. Reich world evolved from cannibalistic societies and the same is true for many others, Chinese too. Fillial Cannibalistic concepts are evident. Jesus Christ offers His body and blood in order to save the human soul. Cannibalism is present in Ancient Greek mythology. Zeus escaped from being eaten by His cannibal father. Gods defeated the old world of cannibal Titans. Yet, Gods demanded a human sacrifice in order to blow the sails of the Greek ships and Troy campaign begin. Keep in mind though, Troy campaign was morally justified as freeing Queen Helen, who Paris abducted from Menelaus Palace. Reich also waged the Crusades and despite their deceptive claims of saving humanity, Reich mission was to conquer the other side of Europe (Byzantium) and Constantinople (Istanbul). Reich gathered the European nations and then expanded across the globe. Ancient red-skin native American, black-skin African etc cultures were exterminated in the name of Christian redemption. Japan encountered West in the form of Christian Missionaries, who just followed the usual Reich practice and tried to exterminate Japanese world burning Shinto (the Japanese religion) Shrines. Thankfully Shogunate saved Japanese Heritage, but they were so deeply scared, they banned any relations with West, except those who respected Japan. Still Japan kept its borders opened to the rest of the world! Reich though does not recognize other worlds, thus their Historians insist on their snubbing claim. Reich should not be considered as a trusted source. On the other hand, Chinese first accounts described Japanese as dwarfs, curtsying all the time, of high morals, having an alien mentality. Everything Japanese roots to Shinto mindset, which is unique and Japanese world evolved this way. It shows today, as each world is the reflection of its Ancestors mentality. Reich gained too. Without Japanese influence, West would had never evolved from Greek Classicism to Modernism. Japonisme describes the Era of first Westerners adoring anything Japanese with an unprecedented passion. Narcissist societies though cannot bear living in the shadow of someone better than them. Japan is treated as a Narcissistic Supply. There are no paradoxes in this world. Nothing happens by chance and there is nothing wrong with Japanese mentality. On contrary, Narcissists attribute their toxic mentality at their targets and as you should know Narcissists don't change mentality. FYI, Kaiser Wilhelm II declared WW2 against Japan in 1895 as a response to 1st Japanese Economic Miracle and US materialized the German call in 1922 starting in Siberia by siding with the Bolsheviks Red Army! Japanese 2nd Economic Miracle occurred in the 1980s and as a response Reich looted Japanese intellectual property. As a result Japan lost its competitive advantage anymore. As a consequence, Japan could not keep up with the stratospheric pace of Japanese development and exposure, thus collapsed. The raiding of Japanese economy meant that 30 % debt to GDP ratio would be skyrocketing to 230%! That's mega war level devastation. Stills though Japanese politicians did not sell Japanese sovereignty to Reich. Japan has always been ahead of the rest of World. Shinto mindset expressed the weakness of human mindset to understand the different forms of life. Thus everything must be respected as equal from humans to stones, liquids, any particle. Japanese mindset evolved on that principle. Japanese say itadakimasu, which is mourning for the lives of the creatures being lost as food source for human survival. It's the stark contrast from Western, South Korean and Chinese per se bon appetite. Japanese felt the Social Darwinism(the 2nd name of Racism) as a result of their success and proposed the Equality of all Races to Narcissist's Woodrow Wilson club "League of Nations". No country supported Japanese proposal, but Liberia. Not even Greece! US President Woodrow Wilson reflects Western mentality and his fame as a moral figure is a testament of Narcissists global gaslighting.

No, they isolated themselves because their current leader, in a act of sheer ignorance, demanded to do so at the time. There is way more to that happening at that time period than just "catholicism bad"

This is a weird question, and a huge one which certainly reveals some of my inherent biases but.... Do you think modern day Japan is capable of turning against itself, in a struggle of reformation? Do you think they could manage a coup enacted by their own people against their own people? My opinion is no. And I place them as the most unlikely to ever do so. I just can't see them going through an 'Asian Spring' as it were. I'm not saying there is necessarily a need for it, though, updated gender roles would be nice, plus the extraordinary racism. But I just can't see them going through with performing violence on one another? Can you?
