Jar Tour | Antique & Vintage Mason Jars | Little Acre Farm

Somehow I managed to whittle this down to about 16.5 minutes. I had to cut out a lot of my fangirl rambling, but here is a very, VERY high level tour of all (well not all, most) of my vintage and antique canning jars. As you can see, I have a lot.

Love the jars. I collect vintage glass as well I can all my food with the glass lids and rubber seal and zinc rings. I love this and prefer to use this instead of metal lid. Your rack looks like mine!!!! I have 3 shelves of quarts, 2 shelves of pints and 2 shelves of half pints. Love love love all the vintage glass. I pay to have them shipped to me cuz I can’t stop. Lol. I fill them all with food too so that is awesome.

Hi! So sorry it took me so long to reply. I missed the notification. 🖤 That’s fantastic! What do you can in quarts? I’ve mostly been using them for dry storage at this point. My most used size is half pints. I’ve been having trouble finding them lately but I’ve been needing them by the dozen.

You did an excellent job on this video. I've just really enjoyed it. I grew up on a farm and I have a farm now that I am raising my children on. And I was a male carrier for 20 some years for the USPS. But I started my own financial business about a year and a half ago. And I've always loved antiques and furniture and decorating and I grew up on a farm so we had all these jars and we had a canning house and we had old smokehouse and root cellar just everything like that and now that I have this furniture sales business and I deal with antiques I still have these items I come across and I save and I love and I actually taught myself as a furniture doctor extraordinaire so I fixed furniture that would be left to die basically lol!! But today I was on here looking for knowledge about jars because I know I have a bunch of blue jars and ball jars and atlas jars but I don't know everything about them I want to learn more. I want to know more about him and I can cross your video and you were great and I just want to say thank you and I want to send you a bunch of jars! I found so many different ones in a recent root cellar that I cleared out. But I also want to tell you that at the end when you told about the pear mince meat... Literally made me cry.. so precious. I really would like to start canning again and I haven't did it since I help my mother and it's been a while but now you've encouraged me to do that. That is it life skill that we all should have. But that was precious. 😰 We forget those things that we did for the love of our family. People used to work hard together. Families were stronger back then because they had to survive , you know? Just wanted to comment and tell you thank you!

Thank you so much, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this video! I love salvaging antiques that no one wants anymore - especially furniture. There are so many special stories in the things that have survived more than a hundred years. One of my favorite pieces is an antique secretary's desk. It's made of tiger oak and still has the original hardware and key. I use it every day when I journal. I could never say no to more jars! I've added quite a few to my collection since I made this video, but I've always got room for more.

Just found you & love your page & you. So genuine. The one you showed with the label & handwriting brought tears to my eyes because going through moms jars I found some with labels written in her hand. She has now passed on :-( A few years back my mom asked if I would like her Canning jars. I said "of course, I would love them!" My late husband & I started hauling boxes of jars up out of the storage area below the house (built on a hillside in Sonora,Calif). A truckbed full almost two layers deep! Going through them recently found glass tops, zink lids, some kind wire holders. Many blue jars & lids. I know a lot of these also came from my great aunt in Idaho. Such family treasures that I hope,my children will treasure as much as I do. I have not been doing Canning but have been dehydrating & using the jars vacuum sealing :-) So looking forward to reading all your posts♡

My neighbor let me salvage old jars that were disposed of down a hill on the side of the yard. In the weeds and trees. I ended up with about 80 usable jars! Took a while to clean them up, but SO worth it. Many were really old and not ball.

I applause you on the interest of old jars.keep in mind,you should go to ebay pre 1900s fruit jars.some are worth good money.I too have a collection, and its trial and error,but i do have some good ones in my collection.Colour may matter and condition always matters as so if the lid and hardware is complete.some jars may have a defect of other colours mixed into the original colour.that is a good thing,cause some may have amber streaks in them.any questions then please ask and i will try and help you out if i can.

That’s very interesting! I’ve never seen a streaked jar. I found a Millville Atmospheric jar at an estate sale recently and snapped it up. It’s not in perfect condition but it’s beautiful and I love it. Do you have a favorite jar or jar manufacturer?

@@littleacrehomestead yes the millville with the glass lid and metal clamp and screw to hold the lid is a nice jar.I have 1 of them.Its a 100.00 plus dollar jar.Woodbury jar with the monogram on it is a beautiful jar.They have neat set up for there lids.Globe are also very pretty.I have 2 in a amber orange colour.Mason patent nov.30th 1858 with hero cross below the word mason in half gallon and in amber are very good lookin jars.I have 2 of them in amber,1 in clear,1 in a crazy very lite yellow in about 70 percent of the jar.That one would bring good money if i sold it,but i collect and not into the resale bit.Any questions?feel free to ask cause i love talking about jars.

@@roystarner8523 actually I could use your help with a jar I got this weekend. It’s a Ball jar, half gallon teal, with “Mason’s Patent 1858.” on the front and the Ball logo from 1903-1904 on the back. No mold number, has bubbles in the glass. I’m trying to estimate a price (for my own collection’s value) on it but I’m not seeing it in the Red Book. I might just be missing it. Any ideas?

@@littleacrehomestead im confused on this one cause i have never seen a ball like that with the 1903 -1904 on the back.I have red book no.12,but im not saying that it wasnt made cause you have one.I know that the ball patent nov.1858 has the ground lip on the mouth of the jar and is not smooth and that its before 1900.However the back says its after 1900 and should be a smooth lip at the mouth of the jar.No mold number is not a deal breaker but im gonna be honest with you,its sounding like a repro. im not sure but im gonna keep looking cause i dont want to steer you wrong.Red book doesnt have anything on jars that have defects or crazy colours that makes them unique.Not to say they arent out there.

Are you saying Alice or Atlas? I have a couple of Knox jars and a Drey jar. I really know nothing about these brands.

Hi Susan! These are Atlas jars. Hazel Atlas are my favorites. Knox was in business from 1917 to 1968. Drey was bought out by Ball and became their discount line. You can’t read more here: www.fruitjar.org/drey.htm It’s all so interesting!

I understand the addiction as well I started out looking for lids that were pretty. I was interested in the limited edition design series blue and green. I called the Mason Ball company to find out where to buy them but she said they were old and not good to use. Now my obsession is with glass lids and zinc bands. It’s been hard.

I was given some jars from a lady at church and I think I have some old ones. One of them the word Ball faded, one looks to be the 1910-1923 because it has the word Ball with the letter "a" ( hard to describe) has leg or writing in the front of the "a" it's a qaurt size and a pint jar the same way. Do they have any value

I pressure can raw pack boneless chicken in wide mouth pint jars. It fits about a pound of meat. I too really enjoy vintage and unique canning jars. Nowadays it is hard to find jar lids that are United States made without breaking the bank.

I’ve never canned meat, but I’d like to give it a try! Do you have a recipe you like to use? It really is tough to find the kids these days. I have a decent back stock of them for this gardening season but after I’m not looking forward to paying the high prices. I’ve gotten lucky a few times and found some at estate sales.

@@littleacrehomestead I use the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning for some of my recipes especially meat. They have beef, pork, chicken and venison. And I do believe they also have fish. I have ordered the book from their website.

@@littleacrehomestead I do have this jar that was waiting for me this one night..I told myself.." what are u doing, u didn't bring a flashlight and your digging in pikes of broken glass, go home is Fri night" then my inner voice answered myself! Lol. It said wait your gonna find your first blue Ball glass tonight..20 seconds later I was on it, hoping it was gonna be intact wedged under this old car tire fur 50+ years..prob took me another 10 min and it was all there! Can't seem to figure out how to post a pic with this message.. not too tech savy...if u know how tell me.. What about yours? I could go on about tons of different dog ice found!
