I really enjoyed this conversation. I think conversations like this are very important. Given this, I suggest that you hire a competent audio technician who knows how to attach a lapel mike to a shirt or tie so that it does not click against other clothing. In addition this same person should know how to run an audio board to maintain a constant audio level and install audience microphones and ask the members of the audience to line up at the microphones so we can clearly hear the questions.

@@FreedomFROMReligionID If I'm not mistaking, Harari's views on religion are not so distant from Dawkins' ones, and it doesn't seem to me that he holds that religion and science can work together (he writes that, throughout history, science has been forced to be "driven" by religion - but he means also secular ideologies by this term -, but that's another issue). Especially in "Sapiens", he highlights how humankind's living standards kept quite low over the vast majority of human history (irrespective of each society's ideological and religious tenets), and if nowadays things are basically better than ever before for humans (because, as he points out, non-human animals are still subjected to large amounts of suffering) it is thanks to economic and scientific development, most of which took place in the last century. Furthermore, in several occasions he claims, in "21 lessons for the XXI century", morality to have a Darwinian origin. I think Dawkins and Harari would agree on many subjects.

You'll find as people grow older the fear of death in many of them becomes an overwhelming dark cloud on their horizon and they turn to God in the form their cultural produce it as a way to cling to the childish wish that once that dark cloud engulfs them somehow they'll pass through it and come out again on the other side. But we must face reality this final and complete there are no gods goddesses or other deities to save us. Just our fear of death. And like old children you need to grow up and get over that fear and make the most of the life we've been given.

Richard's point on religion being used to retain authority and Jared's definition.The relationship is linked to the natural human instinct where power seeks expansion and geographical growth. The power of muscle is sufficient to find a leader within small group. If more muscle resides within the leaders family or group then that permits the first expansion to control perhaps a few more 100. The result & consequence of power is wealth & privilege. These ignite the desire to expand beyond the resource of muscle. Unintelligent muscle creates fear to get extra numbers to submit. However this is not sustainable. The intelligent soon realise that to grow the need is to use "license". Enter Religion. A belief system with diktat holds larger numbers to join the tribe. The binder beyond belief is economics and dependency. The poor & weak are the obvious target. Once the model holds then self appointed caretakers take on the franchise and "grow the business". The hierarchy of Muscle, economics, licensing agency is then able to formalise itself as a Religion. When combined it is a fast growing movement & almost always uses varying combinations of these three resources.

Despite the fact that I actually believe in God (not meaning that I'm sure about His existence) I find this discussion very interesting. There are many points, which should be analyzed deeply, as for example the chain on ancestors and the question who can be the first human on that chain. However, I wouldn't exclude that there is some human in that chain with non-human parent. Genetical closure doesn't necessarily mean that these creatures are in the same amount human, maybe there is something more to being human that it's genes. Despite its value, there is something which I dislike in that conversation. Namely, I don't find the multiplicity of reasons for the arise of religion very convincing. Usually in science good explanations are simple explanations and the list of several very different reasons is not a simple one. To be clear, I don't think that explaining the emergence of religion is contradictory with the truth of it. Why God couldn't design universe and us, human beings, in such a way that we developed the right beliefs along some quite natural process?

@jamesshepherd9390 religions are allegorical and poetic stories and are not all the same in their lessons. Also, translations into other languages often result in disastrous distortions of meaning. For instance in the Bible, "homosexual", the original textual Greek word is "arsenokoitai" which wasn't speaking about homosexuality but rather _pederasty,_ the ancient practice of Greek men having romantic relations with young teenage boys. So the lesson isn't that gay people are barred from the kingdom of God, but that those who have sexual relations with children unable to actually give consent are. The difference in meaning is absolutely massive and yet this mistranslation entered most major English bibles in our modern times, likely for shameful ideological reasons. Interestingly other cultures translations used pederasty, "boy molesters". I just think the four horsemen, Dawkins, Hitchens and them, could have taken on fundamentalism by going into the stories and parsing them more intelligently, rather than crusading in bad faith against the craziest interpretations out there. There are so many intelligent and even deeply atheistic takes on the Bible, but you'd never know because there is too much popular enjoyment to be had in assuming every person in every culture interprets the book literally/inerrantly. There are beautiful meta lessons in humility, tragedy, loss and sacrifice, forgiveness, ethics, communion, reflexivity and love for others, contained within. That concept is referred to as “agency.” And it was mentioned by Dawkins when he talked about the grass moving in the Sahara and the benefit of agency or you could call it imagination by assuming it’s caused by a python or something else that might be existentially dangerous and therefore taking appropriate measures despite having visual evidence but rather inferring agency.

Bradley, let's just assume for a moment that this vignette you've described is entirely true, accurately conveyed (i.e. McGuire is correct that the men who "cracked" were atheists or non-believers of some sort), and supports the conclusion you have drawn from it. Do you think that it lends credence to Theism when one's mind is virtually coerced into belief by close proximity TO / fear OF death? Is it truly an endorsement of the validity of Belief when men under the extreme wartime duress described by McGuire above - men whose capacity for rational thought about metaphysical matters is utterly compromised, SHATTERED, even, by the omnipresent Specter of Death- embrace the primal salve of the religion they were suckled on? Furthermore, why on earth would you take a second-hand account of another fallible human (an Airman who served alongside maybe .0002 percent of the total number of service-people? Is that a reasonable sample size to draw ANY sort of respectable conclusion? ) and make such an astounding inductive leap is beyond me. My conclusion: you have an unfounded bias against non-theists.
