Jared Padalecki's Texan accent anecdote - Burcon 2013

Sunday, November 24 - During Jared and Jensen's panel at Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural Convention in Burbank, CA (Burcon 2013), a fan asks them to say something in their best Texan accent. Instead, Jared tells the fans a cute anecdote, that involves his wife, Genevieve.

Although both Jensen and Jared have accents they both have said Jared's is stronger. He's gone to speech therapist to have it dialed down. I think the accents are adorable. Texas really has hot looking men.

Jared's is quite a bit stronger than Jensen's, even though both have been acting for a while..I still have to go "What? Pardon?" sometimes when listening to him talk.

Jacquie Sabatier I know me too. There have been times I get totally confused to what exactly he's saying. Like I said though I think the accents are just adorable. I have no problem with them.

on the show if you listen carefully in their scenes when they get angry or start yelling, they let their Southern, Texan accent slip... then it goes back to normal..it is super funny!

Yeah i remember i first really noticed it in season 1, in the episode that they team up with John to kill that vampire nest and Sam gets into that fight with John in the middle of the road after forcing John to a stop

As an aussie, all american accents sound the same to me...people are commenting that when they're doing emotional scenes their accents are stronger and im just here like isnt that how people talk in america??

Oh, no, not all. It's kinda like how English people don't have the same accent as French nor Scottish people folks. Those countries are dwarfed by the United States. It makes sense people from different regions have significantly different accents taking into account the difference in size.

I'm a New Yorker living in the South and the first time I talked to someone down here out in the middle of nowhere I had the SAME reaction Genevieve did! Although I understood what Jared said in his accent, sometimes when people down here talk I am literally lost lol. Sometimes when my New York accent comes out people down here make fun of me lol

For some reason, in the very first episode, the moment Jensen started talking, I picked up some serious accent goin' on there, and for a couple moments, I wondered if it was real or fake. But then his accent went away at some point.

born in raised in Dallas, im so accustomed to southern accents that when my friends from other states visit, i forget they never really hear southern accents and their reactions are hilarious XD

people are like, What did he say and being a Texan I understood him. Im Texas born and raised. I grew up about an hour from San Antonio and I'm there quite often. Me I'm just like what if I saw Jared when I was little and don't remember. Or like what if we were in the same building. lol I need to calm my little self down.

Having lived in the South for as long as I could remember (I was adopted when I was 3 from China and so I learned English in the South), it's kind of weird seeing people that can't understand what he's saying when I can understand it just fine haha :D

Even though I didn't grow up in Texas (my birth state), I love it that I share my birthplace with some awesome people and don't have to constantly apologize for where I'm from because I get Jensen and Jared.

snillocgrom Im from India but hung out around British and Auzy people and picked the accent..but its slight, i have to control myself from fully going into the Britzy accent... so i start talking with a normal accent from Ohio and tehn some words will be accented or even a full sentence and i'd have no idea it happened till someone gives me a weird look like what just happened or what did you just say... Sorry so much to read...

Texan here. I had to listen to it twice, but you're correct. Except he said it more like "Whydja wahnt that?" And he's completely correct. I've grown up in Abilene (which is pretty cosmopolitan for a smaller city), but there are tons of people from Potosi, Clyde, and Baird that I run into on a regular basis whose accents would probably throw any non-Texan for a loop.

I love our southern accents and our gentle southern ways so I'm bias. I guess my name gives it away. I live in the Deep South in Alabama. Where the traffic is slow. Not a red light in sight. I love sitting one my porch swing at night smelling jasmine and honey suckles at night not smog. Historic beautiful antebellum homes everywhere. Small town life you can't beat it❤️

Born and bred in the south, lived in Texas most of my life. I'm hard of hearing which has screwed up my accent detection software, but I don't hear one in Jared Padalecki.Having said that, I watched the pilot of Supernatural and asked my mom "Does the actor playing Dean actually have a speech impediment or is he putting it on for the character?" She took a solid 10 seconds to think before replying "He's from Texas. It's a Texas accent. You're FROM Texas!" So don't take my opinion too seriously on accents.

They haven't got rid of it. They're just doing a more generalised American accent when they act. They let it slip when they're at home or at cons, if you watch a load of clips, you can quite clearly hear that they sound nothing like they do on the show.

Yeah, they didn't get rid of it. They just have to use a more neutral accent for the show/interviews so everyone can understand what they are saying...sometimes they slip though 😂

I'm just not hearing the accents on either of them, perhaps it's too slight to pick up on for me. I've never had an issue with understanding what they're saying except when the sound is distorted or the crowd is being too loud. I normally pick up on accents that I'm not accustomed to and I have very little experience with Texan accents, I've only ever heard a slight one on a friend who moved to Texas about 8 years ago and I only noticed it on her because I had never heard one in person before.

It depends where in Texas you're from also. I grew up in Houston and have had New Yorkers say they'd never have guessed I was Texan because I didn't have an accent. If you grow up in rural Texas (or anywhere else in the South,) you're more likely to have an accent. Also, I've never had a problem understanding Jared or Jensen, and I find it cute that others do. ;)

I know how they feel. When I lived in Montana i worked in a call center for bank of america's California market and i constantly got the "where I'm calling?"question. I constantly had to tell them they are calling Montana but if they are trying to guess my accent I'm from Tennessee.

Question to all the Americans that come across this: Do you feel uncomfortable when you're from the south and hear people from the north talking because of their accent? Because I'm from the very south of germany and accent down here is very strong and so is mine. And when I'm talking to someone from the north, or specifically east, I'm all the time like “argh could you stop that terrible accent, it makes me feel so uncomfortable!“ So do you know that feeling?

Maja Barbarino I was born and raised in Alabama (the deep South), but I have lived in the North several times. I don't feel uncomfortable listening to people from the North. Northern people have the stereotype that Southerners are lazy, stupid and maybe crazy. Southerners think Northerners have no manners and are rude. A lot of people believe this because the North and the South fought each other in the Civil War. It's mostly subtle dislike.

There are various accents in the US. Y'all only know tv accents played by actors who have had to go to speech to get rid of their regional accent and use a flat accent for roles. Unless you have lived here and been around the country you wouldn't know.
