A lot of comments about how creepy the age difference is, but we don’t know what the age of Jareth is supposed to be. Bowie was in his late 30’s filming this, doesn’t mean his character was. Seems all these stories about magical realms the characters are children that age but seem to stop growing old at a point.

Usually the sweet 16 balls were an introduction to a young lady to society. Sarah’s character is meant to be 16 so it is a coming of age. In reality suitors at the time were older than the girls, because they had to prove themselves in life, by making a reputable way of living to prove that they could provide for the for the young women. Of course we have a notion of marriage that is romantic, but in older times men were supposed to be the providers entirely for the family hence the older age and man to have a good reputation. Sometimes marriages were arranged by people doing that knew the matches and their compatibility of temperament. People have held different beliefs at different historical points in time.
