Great video with some lovely looking snapper there mate. So glad to see you meeting your catch at the waters edge rather than dragging them 50 metres along the sand, respect to the fish right. I normally visit my son and his family every year in Auckland but this last year I’ve been stuck in the UK during multiple COVID lockdowns. Really looking forward to getting vaccinated so the wife and I can get back out there, I really miss my Kiwi beach fishing, oh and the trout fishing. Keep up with the videos I’ll try not to get to jealous 😢

It is great fun especially with fam or mates, nothing better casting out a bait and waiting for that tip to twitch or double over - that's a solid fish for off the sand would have been a good scrap but yep love catching snaps off the sand :-) Tight lines

Keep the tips up on finding the holes in the beach loving it. Quick question is it to spot them on low tide rather than high?
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Cheers rrm You can spot them on either tides depending on the swell - in a small swell it can be difficult because the waves sometimes don't build up and break - on a small swell the low would be better as it will get a little more shallow on the outer sides of the hole and break - Once you get to know what rolling water/wave to an actual wave looks like then you will see a lot more - what your looking for is pretty much calm water or rolling wave among the waves/turbulence - on this day I spotted the hole on the low due to the waves breaking on that outer bank then dying away only to reform and break again 20 or so meters after the hole. Hope that helps and Tight lines

How long are the rods? This newbie's all ready to go bro, I just don't know where to head out to on the west coast. Keen for surf and rock fishing.
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Hi bbb If mainly fishing from the sand you want a good 14-14'6 rod at least - for off the rocks you can fish with 8,10 and 12ft rock rods. 12ft is a little more versatile cause you can get away with a bit of east coast beach fishing or west coast harbor or a flat water fish. West coast has plenty of places but it is very rugged and can be extremely dangerous - you want to learn swells and winds etc for the west. A bit of east coast fishing will help but the likes of the inner Manukau, port waikato etc where the water is a little more tamed may be a good starting for you - beaches can be hard work but just remember the smaller the swell the easier the fishing will be. A lot of guys just get gun ho and head off with out researching the area for wind, swell and tides then have a mere of a day and can get discouraged - it takes longer but try to learn to fish places when the weather and tides allow and your success will be greater. Hope that helps and tight lines

@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing thanks bro, might have to rethink where I'm heading. Been scoping out the west coast since it's closer. I only have a 10ft rod as a starter.

@@eijnew try finding a few rocky outcrops to fish from in to deeper water or a channel in one of the harbors. Places from Green bay up to little Huia etc - or even the other side by South head. Tight lines

Another great vid! Any tips on avoiding the crabs? Been getting smashed by them around papamoa last weekend. Is it just perseverance or am I just not casting far enough out?
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Hi JT Yip they can be a nuisance in some places - there's not a lot you can do but try a few experiments with your traces - I like to use the dropper rig as the bait is more up off the bottom and make it an extra long trace so put ya hook a good 40-50cm up rather than the usual near the bottom. You could also try a running rig wit a longish trace with a longline ball float on it so your bait is floating upwards - you may have to put x2 on or get the bigger one - just try a few things till it works. Normally if there are a few paddle crabs around so should the snapper having ago at them - or could be the opposite because there is no fish in that spot it's crowded with crabs? If you catch one split it in half and use for bait. Hope that helps and tight lines
@johnthomson43974 жыл бұрын
@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing cheers! Will mix it up a bit more next time with the traces for sure.

I find that its a bit hard to cast 4oz with the veritas but that might just be because Im weak, not too sure. Do you have any tips to cast further?
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Hi TX You shouldn't have to much of a problem casting a 4oz on the Vtas you should be getting no less than 60mtrs and up to 80 with that weight maybe even more depending the weight of your line - you can even go up to a 5 with no probs. Make sure you are setting up your cast before letting it rip, I see you have seen my how to tip for improving your cast vid - did this help at all and have you been trying those tips out. Tight lines

What kind of reel ur using? Do you recommend braid on a surfcasting reel?
@85subbu2 жыл бұрын
Is SW wind or onshore wind good for surfcasting there bro?
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing2 жыл бұрын
Hi SA You can always fish places when it is onshore, it is only an un-comfort for the fisherman. 9 times out of 10 there will still be fish there and sometimes the fishing can be better as it builds waves and stirs up the bottom. Being west coast safety comes into affect - the more it's blowing onshore the messy it will get and the white water/waves get bigger and can become hard to fish. I try not to fish the west coast over a 10knt onshore but if the swell is very small (under a mtr) I will fish it to 15knt on shores. As stated above it does come a lot more uncomfortable for the fisher. Tight lines
