In a sense Jaskier contributes very little to the plot. He doesn't make any major decisions or help resolve situations. He mainly just tags along and occasionally acts as a "plothook" to get Geralt involved in a quest. Hypothetically a generic new character could be used to get Geralt involved with the various plots. But the show just wouldn't be the same without him. I love the way that he is written and portrayed. He's a great foil to Geralt and allows us some insight into Geralt's character. Jaskier is an interesting character in his own right, who's grown over the series and helps generate Character development in Geralt.
