Oh my, the look his wife gave him at the beginning when Jasmine mentioned the toilet being off center 🤣 Something tells me that she hasn't been on board with the DIY addition for a while now!

Jasmine, we DIY'd our entire addition. We refinanced our house when interest rates kept dropping. Got some cash out. Locked in a low fixed rate during a lull in my husband's work schedule. We did hire out the dig and the foundation. We did the design that fit the terrain of our property. Then we lived on the cheap while he built from the foundation up. He re-taught himself Calculus so he could spec out the roof trusses. Too much to list here, but it was such a blast to see with our own eyes what ultimately gave us the house we wanted. Not for everyone, but we knew we could never afford to hire out the project.

Mercifully for us, in our town you go through planning, pull permits and they inspect wiring and plumbing before you close up the walls. I do remember watching the boom truck delivering the roof trusses to my husband while up on a ladder--during some freezing rain. He always tells me: "Careful is my middle name"! He wears technical climbing gear when he's on our roof and ties it to the frame of my minivan. We look a little funny around here but we have fun!

@@amyhood6562 We worked hard to design in a mudoom entrance, walks into large walk-in pantry, first floor laundry, and the only first floor bedroom. So we can age in place.

tbh it seemed like they had to make it really dramatic for TV but obviously it wasn't as bad as they made it sound or else they would have literally had to tear it down and start over... since they were able to just make basic repairs and finish it means... it wasn't that bad!

construction is a trade. you can learn to do it yourself. But to get it right, Learning is the hard part. doing is the easy part. If they just stuck with it, they could've done it. But they'd just spend more time and money. And make way more mistakes. Im not saying youtube should be your University/tradeschool into starting a construction job or business but theres tons of DIY's from reputable sources that could get you started or point you in the right direction. She makes it seem like its rocket science and no home owner should ever attempt it.
