@Phished1238 ай бұрын
yeah not only was it more dense but the smooth shape of the formed ice like an ice cube would also make it more aerodynamic, which would generate more heat, but make it harder for the wind resistance to break the ice up. Im sure its possible for this to happen in real life, but i bet its highly unlikely.
@hanzosbm18 ай бұрын
@@jackfranks7160 Yes, but in the wind tunnel, they had to increase temperature to get it fall off, simulating lower altitudes (not sure if they changed airspeed at all). I wish they would've stayed a little more consistent on this one (what temp did the ice fall off? What approximate altitude does that correspond to? What is the density of the ice formed in this way? How would it have reacted?) My gut feeling is that it's still plausible, but I would've liked to have seen it done more accurately.

The first thing I noticed in your blue ice experiment is that the ice forming on the plane scenario the ice forms in crystals with crevices and spaces. Your ice was one solid smooth sided block which I think would not melt in the same time as the real one.

Would have been nice to take a block created under windy conditions. And then let it go in the type of room skydivers use for training. Turning up the temperature. Calculate the time it takes to fall.
@psychotimo5 ай бұрын
exactly this. These tests, at best, prove that it's (possibly) plausible. no more, no less The ice in the wind tunnel test was opaque, meaning there was a lot of air trapped inside of it, making it less structurally stable. And the crevices and spaces you mentioned would be a good spot for the wind to "grab onto" and pull it apart into smaller pieces. The ice they made for the drop test was smooth and clear, meaning fully crystallized ice with limited air trapped inside (higher structural integrity) and smooth walls where wind can't as easily grab onto it. Hell, the wind tunnel ice would even drop slower due to higher wind resistance, causing it to have more time to disintegrate.

There is a slight issue I have with a testing methodology for the explosion myth. I have personally witnessed a house explode from a leaking gas pipe. The gas pipe was leaking for around 25-30 minutes. And all it took was one spark in the whole house was reduced to rubble and it was made of cinder block and brick. Pieces of it hit my mom's place. I heard it from my apartment. It shook the ground
@derpmanaveragegamer77918 ай бұрын
that wasnt the myth though? they know it will explode/burn *eventually* since it does happen IRL alot. the myth was that you could have it happen as quickly and in the same fashion as in the movie, which you cant. you get the explosion from the spontaneous ignition of all the natural gas at the same time, where as the movies slow leak doesnt give enough time for the gas to reach a proper mixture ratio and causes it to act as a fire accelerant instead of a explosive ignition.

Likely in the first test with the house the problem was that their house had a lot of open seams in it. The wall were not tightly built together like they are in proper homes.

some flashing tape would have helped tremendously I bet

My house is propane, and my sisters house is natural gas. They both light up with very little oxygen present. Propane will light with zero O2 present. The houses in my area are all full propane; from hot water heater to kitchen stove.

37:14 that’s similar to what my friend and I did at the Tracy airport. His family ran the airport and they had a yearly event called flower bombing. Everyone got together to drop bags of flower at a target and whoever hit the target or the closest to it won. Fun times. He moved after his mom died. Never could find him again.

Love this episode... but in regards to the toaster part of the myth... European toasters run on 220v, the for sure brown faster than American toasters, so I would expect them to catch fire faster than American ones.

A diversion, eh? I'm sure the three guys flying through the air considered it a little more than a diversion. LOL. 🙂

I’ve only just realised the UK versions have a different narrator - which means the American folk never got to enjoy the little chuckle at the end of each episode as the name Robin Banks showed up.

I'm the big fan of the Jason Bourne treelogy, and you have done a great job that I can't ever believe! But for the blue ice, I have doubt. In nasa experiment it was like a foam consistency of ice, and at the end it was a solid chunk of ice.
