I'm a JE fan but like many singers that lean toward blues/soul/R&B he often injects too many runs, slurs, peculiar phrasing and other vocal techniques that detract from, rather than add to, the song. He has a good enough voice to carry any song without all that. A good example is his performance in "For Once he My Life" with Dara MacLean. His "backing" vocal stole that video. Wish he'd do more like that.
