"He was sweet and soft, shied away from the inside fastballs and died doing life without parole" is literal poetry. So much emotion, nostalgia, sadness, and hope packed into one phrase. Honestly makes me emotional every time he sings it.

When the name of the song popped up on new releases for me on Spotify I almost rolled my eyes. I never thought it would be one of the best songs l've ever heard. I know it doesn’t matter to anyone reading this but I listen to a lot of music including most everything from Jason. I interpret the title as not everything that is passed down as common knowledge is right or true. A gateway into the deep topics of the verses. He is truly one of the best songwriters of this time. I use a little soap with my chain mail scrubber on my Stargazer cast iron. Because I want it to be clean when I cook for my wife, baby and myself. The world can be cruel it’s ok to question things now and then.

Easily my favorite so far off the new album. This one resonates with me on so many different levels. The first verse, especially the line "Don't drink and drive, you'll spill it," really speak to me and my lifelong struggles with depression and alcoholism. I just had my third stay in a psych unit in the middle of February and didn't start getting over the slump until about a week ago. I got accepted for a new, well-paying job with great insurance yesterday and, instead of celebrating, I'm spiraling because I have to take a drug test on Friday and I can't use. So to me, that line in particular means a million different things. I've never driven drunk, but I sure as hell understand prioritizing not spilling the beer, which may be an alcoholic's only comfort, over endangering yourself and others. Another way I take the "spill it" line is that you'll fuck up your life. Should you get in an accident or get pulled over, your proverbial cup will spill and you'll be left with an empty one. Don't even get me started on the final verse about the estranged father and daughter. I'm currently not on speaking terms with my parents, a common theme throughout my 30 years. In the past, love has been a reason, just like in the song. That's not what gets me the most though. What hits me the hardest is "He treats her like a Queen, but you don't know 'cause you ain't seen. It's hard to go through life without your daddy by your side." Those lines are like a dagger through the chest. For me it's not my father, but my mother, who was always my closest friend when I was younger. As I've grown, the arguments have become more frequent and the distance between us has widened. Some days I feel as though my own parents don't want me anymore. This song, which runs a whopping 3 minutes and 24 seconds has compelled me to write this short novel, which tells me just how great a songwriter Isbell is. I'm sure I'll be listening to this one a lot in the next few days.

Hey, thanks for sharing. Good luck to you. Know that you can do it. There's help out there. If you haven't connected with AA, give them a try. Go to a meeting. Get your desire chip. If that's too big a step, just find meetings in your area and know when they meet. Little steps lead to great things and all you can do it take one step at a time. Even if it's barely picking up your foot and moving it forward an inch, it's forward progress. Know you're worthy of loving yourself and treating yourself with respect.

This is true outlaw country Country singers have largely lost their way. Not because of their sound or style but because of their failure to give a voice to the issues of the people. They grift off the divisiveness. They are no longer story tellers for those without a platform and without power. All of the country writers that are still committed to justice and true freedom are carrying a genre that is struggling to uphold its values.

He always had my back & we didn't pull punches....i hear this song & I know the thought of my not having the man who was my first love... And although he's been on his side of the 🌈 mom joined him to dance on clouds. When she passed at a young 94yrs 11mo & 1.3 weeks shy of her 95th birthday.🎉. Felt tired caregiver had her shower & I called twice & she was showering or napping...my bro was there that week but she never did call. Bro went for bike ride & said she'd call me back after he got done. 2 min later it's my brother a Miami resident &b youngish retiree went from bike to get break to screaming she's gone!!!!! That was unreal as I was there. 18 19 days & left to go home for hubby's birthday 🎂 8/9 /22. Was coming back the following week but she passed before I came back. I miss them both... Mom 8/15/22 before her was my sideman who never stopped being my sweet funny considerate husband, son, brother uncle but the daddy by my side is still right there inside my heart. JI is a heavenly writer player & all the things that make lb him the one act we'd go anywhere to see... And we try.... rest peaceful daddy & mom... That 2nd listen though. The great songs grow roots and Isbell has so many great ones. Add this to the list.

This song sticks, just like my pancakes in that cast iron skillet. Jason, you did it again, just wonderful.

Standing in my kitchen all alone - dark outside and staring at my cast iron skillet…a beautiful and haunting song…with all the previous albums…will we yet again say this one’s the best? They are all deep and powerful.
