Jason Frederick Kidd, is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards of all time. He is currently the head coach for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Kidd was a 10-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA First Team member, and a nine-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He won an NBA championship in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks and was a two-time gold medal winner in the Olympics with the U.S. national team in 2000 and 2008. He was inducted as a player into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In October 2021, Kidd was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all time by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Kidd who is listed as 6 ft 4 inches tall and weighs 210 lb, was born on March 23, 1973, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Oakland. Kidd was born to Steve Kidd, an African-American, and Anne, an Irish-American. His father, Steve Kidd, was an amateur basketball player, while his mother, Anne Kidd, was a homemaker. He grew up alongside two younger sisters: Denise and Kim. He developed an impressive set of basketball skills from an early age. He attended the East Oakland Youth Development Center and frequented the city courts of Oakland, where he often found himself pitted against future Basketball Hall of Famer Gary Payton. Kidd married his first wife, Joumana, in 1997. In January 2001, he was arrested and pled guilty to a domestic abuse charge for assaulting her. As part of his plea, Kidd was ordered to attend anger management classes for six months. Kidd is currently married to Porschla Coleman, a former model. They got married on September 10, 2011, after three years of dating. Kidd has three kids with Joumana: Trey Jason and the twins Jazelle and Miah. Porschla and Jason have three kids of their own called Chance, Noah Grace, and Cooper Anne Kidd. Kidd is a follower of Christianity.
Kidd attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, California. He later attended the University of California at Berkeley. Kidd completed his final course requirements from the University of Phoenix to receive a degree in English.
About Kidd’s High School Career: Kidd led his high school basketball team, St. Joseph Notre Dame, to back-to-back state championships under the guidance of coach Frank LaPorte. He was named the national high school player of the year in 1992. He also received a host of individual honors, including the Naismith Award as the nation's top high school player. He was the all-time prep leader in assists (1,155) and the state's seventh-highest career scorer (2,661 points), Kidd was voted California Player of the Year for the second time and also a McDonald's All-American. On January 31, 2012, Kidd was honored as one of the 35 Greatest McDonald's All Americans. He chose to play college basketball at the University of California, Berkeley over a number of top-ranked collegiate programs including the University of California, Los Angeles, University of Arizona, University of Kentucky, University of Kansas and Ohio State University.
About Kidd’s College Career: Kidd played college basketball at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned national Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the All-Pac-10 team and helped the Golden Bears earn an NCAA Tournament bid as a freshman. as a sophomore, he was selected a First Team All-American, the first University of California, Berkeley player to be named since 1968, as well as Pac-10 Player of the Year, becoming the first sophomore to receive that honor. Kidd was also named a finalist for both the Naismith and Wooden Awards as college basketball's top player and subsequently opted to enter the NBA draft in 1994. Cal retired Kidd's number 5 jersey in 2004.
After declaring for NBA draft, he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks for a professional career with the second pick of the 1994 NBA draft . Jason Kidd had a remarkable playing career in the NBA, which spanned 19 seasons. He played for four teams: the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, New Jersey Nets, and New York Knicks. Kidd was known for his exceptional skills as a point guard. He averaged 12.6 points, 8.7 assists, and 6.3 rebounds in 1,391 regular-season games. His performance on the court earned him a spot in 10 All-Star games. In 1995, Kidd won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, sharing it with Grant Hill of the Detroit Pistons. This marked the beginning of a successful career filled with numerous accolades. Kidd’s most significant achievement as a player came in 2011 when he won an NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks. This was a crowning moment in his career, solidifying his status as one of the greatest point guards in the history of the sport. In recognition of his contributions to the game, Kidd was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
