Although Cliff was a musical prodigy, I feel like Jason was the best bassist for Metallica. From his infectious energy, and all or nothing approach, to his amazing backing vocals, and easy going nature…and when it came to live shows, Jason was quite literally the battery of Metallica!

I don't agree with this. Clif had a monster energy playing live and did the backing vocals both live and in studio (something Jason never was allowed to). Love Jason, but the same infectious energy you see in Jason, you saw in Cliff as well, or even bigger. And Im not even talking about songwriting skills. Cliff in my eyes has no substitutes and I think James, Lars and Kirk still miss him as a member of Metallica

@@paulosantiago7457 I agree with you. Cliff will always be Metallica's perfect bass guitar player. Metallica are who they are because of Cliff Burton. The other members learned so much from Cliff in a very short amount of time. It was a huge major step up from Kill 'Em All to Ride The Lightning and it was because of Cliff Burton. Cliff Burton had no writing credits on Kill 'Em All besides Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) because the rest of the album was complete before he joined the band. Jason Newstead did keep the spirit alive in his time in being in Metallica. Jason was never looked at as a replacement for Cliff. That is why the other members hazed him the whole time when he was in the band. They do regret how bad they hazed him later because he did not deserve it. That was just their way of dealing with Cliff's passing.

@@paulosantiago7457 i totally agree with you, only that it is wrong what you said about the backing vocals in the studio. James always did all the backing vocals, too. Metallica songs where other backing vocals were necessary are rare and Jason had the same limitations/freedoms here that Cliff had.

This is not an honest interview. Neither of them is being honest. Jason, and the guy asking the questions. Have you seen Metallica live during the Load Tour? Check out the Cunning Stunts live concert. James, Kirk and Lars are as heavy as they always were, including their stage presence and attitude. "Jason was the only one keeping the band heavy in live shows" LOOOL. WHAT THE FUCK?! Fanboy delusional attacks. Proof is on youtube for everyone to see and hear. James is particularly bad ass and aggressive in the Load Tour. "We have an announcement to make... We came here... TO KICK YOUR ASS!!" Plus, Load and Reload are great albums. And there's some heavy, dark and complex stuff there.

Totally disagree with you, man. During the Load, Reload and even Garage Inc. tours Metallica played the old stuff in a slower tempo. Proof of that is, actually, the Cunning Stunts DVD. Watch that one again and after that watch the Live Shit Seattle 1989. If you cant see the difference on the speed, you have a hearing problem. @@rocktalks5706 Yes, and in 1986 and 87 they played even faster than in 1989. And the same thing could be said about many thrash metal bands. Bands evolve, and choose different options, because they get tired of the same approaches. And of course, James fueled with alcohol and drugs, during those performances, contributed to that frantic playing. But even so, if you pay attention to the Ride the Lightning album, for example, you will realize that more than half of that album is NOT fast paced, at all. Slow tempo, even. And it was 1984.

Jason's so cool, he's a fan's fan! So down to earth, you wouldn't think he was the bassist for one of metals most influential bands for well over a decade. This is one of the reasons he's missed by Metallica fans so much, he's just like one of us! Robert is a great bassist, but it goes a lot deeper than that! He's far from filling Jason's shoes in that respect, and fans will never really forgive Metallica for they way Jason was unjustly treated while a part of Metallica either.

I personally never liked the “image” they put across in the late nineties. It was anathema to what they were about in the beginning and made them look like posers. The music itself was hit and miss, but it did come across as another insincere pose, but a little ballsy in that it risked alienating their fan base. At the end of the day, I don’t really listen to those songs. I stick with the first four and everything from st anger to the present.

Like you said the music was hit and miss, if they took out half the songs from Load and Reload, and didn't feel like very song need to push five minutes then they would be consistently good. The image stuff was a nail in the coffin before anyone even heard the music. I think they could have gotten away with cutting their hair if they hadn't done all of the other "artsy" stuff led by Kirk and Lars.

As someone who lived through the 90s I can tell you once grunge died with Kurt Cobain, Rock music in general was not very good from 1995 until 2000. you have to credit Metallica for changing with the times because most 1980s bands that did not change burned out and died. With that said I look back at that period of time as not great musically period. This includes pop music dance music pretty much everything was awful in the mid to late 90s. Have to completely disagree. Metallica’s “sellout” was just another domino to fall, in addition to Cobain’s suicide and GNR’s breakup. Van Halen, Ozzy, AC/DC, Down, Soundgarden all released legit albums in ‘95-‘96. Metallica could have done the same but went the Generation Swine route. Edit: I do agree music went straight to shit from ‘97 onwards.

About this era, I'm pretty sure James stated in some interview that he and Lars weren't so controlling during Load/Reload, and that was basically Jason and Kirk taking more control over the process. Now it looks like no one was really in control and the vision wasn't so clear to anyone in the band.

Guess who I blame? Bob F-ing Rock....and Lars, he's just as greedy as the industry. The dude came in and flashed a bunch if money in their faces and in my personal opinion....And Justice For All was their last album. I literally heard that Newstead say "Sellouts? Yeah we are sellouts, we sell out every seat in the stadium" So that tells me all I need to know about them as a band during and after the black album. They fell victim to the industry and Bob Rock was the piece of shite who ruined them.

He’s kept making music but I think Turing is just too physically demanding for him but I really wanted to hear one or two Ozzy Osbourne albums with Jason on base. To me that was like a super group Ozzy Osbourne, Jason, Mike and Zack? Come on that’s heavy metal royalty right there. I couldn’t make it to Ozzfest in 2003 but I really wanted to just see that monster line up on stage. I’m very proud of Jason and he has nothing to be ashamed of. At the end of the day he gets to say he was a part of Metallica for 15 years during their most successful run, he was on their two best selling albums of all times and he gets to say that he was a member of the Ozzy Osbourne band as well. He’s such a cool And genuine dude.

It was the direction of rock and metal at the time. In the '90s, you either went the death metal/black metal route, the groove metal route like Pantera, stoner metal, or you went mainstream with grunge and alternative rock/metal. If you stayed as a thrash or glam metal band, you wouldn't have survived. The remaining thrash bands had to change their sound quite a bit. But yes, Load/Reload era Metallica did have more of a grunge and/or stoner metal sound to it. Similar to Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Kyuss or CoC like you said.

Comments Add a public comment... Ben Bond1 second ago Nice to hear that the Load/Reload era didn't make much sense to him. Making a statement with a ballad like Nothing Else Matters was one thing, but the major derailment of the powerful attitude, and then the makeup? I didn't care about the hair, but the rest of the image was so ridiculously obvious that they were desperate to stay relevant to the alternative mainstream. They seemed like they ignored a lot of what got them to where they were...the underground. So I can't blame Jason for feeling something was really off back then. Hearing new the Metallica single in '95, as Until It Sleeps, was such a disappointment, like they were going to be the new hosts of Alternative Nation (which royally pissed me off...that show replacing Headbangers Ball). In my opinion, they never regained the attitude...live in some good ways (old and obscure tunes), but not the studio. The move back to making heavier, faster music, just seems like they've tried to re-prove themselves to their original fans. Meh.
