Why Brenda? Edward was the one who deceived her under false pretenses so I don't see how you can blame Brenda.

It all started when Sonny lied to Lois and Brenda about his dealings with the mob. Ned, being Ned, hired Mac and Felicia to investigate Sonny, so she went to Harry's office under the guise of making an illegal bet. When Harry briefly left his office, Felicia planted a transmitter bug under his desk. Once Mac obtained the incriminating evidence on tape he gave a copy to Ned, who played it for Lois and Brenda. Fast forward to your question Edward was never in agreement with Ned moonlighting as Eddie Maine, so after Lois naively turned to Mr. Q for help, he did the ultimate betrayal when he bought out Sonny's shares of L&B records, giving him 80% of the majority. There is much more but I don't remember it all.
